The best clubs this fortnight
The Funk Room Glasgow has been without a dedicated funk club for quite some time, so the Arches have fixed things with this brand new evening dedicated to the raw-edged, tight as you like end of the spectrum. For the launch night, The New Mastersounds bring heady live experience and DJ veterans Dig! Family provide an across- the-board funk blend. Fri 20 Oct, The Arches.
Hi Karate Andrew Dive and Neil MacMillan's Thursday nighter has been chopping up hip hop, breaks, drum & bass and what used to be called big beat to exhilarating effect for four years now. To celebrate, the residents have inVited Andy Smith of Portishead fame to jOll’l in the fun. Thu 26 Oct, The Glasgow School of Art.
Optimo The filthy abuses of musical propriety continue apace at the club that has made Monday mornings redundant in certain circles. Quite frankly, nightclubbing doesn’t come any better than this and with Mount Florida playing their party techno live, staying in is not an option. Sun 22 Oct, Substitute Venue (Planet Peach).
Pressure Once again, Pressure have assembled a bevy of fine guests. In the main room with Stuart and Orde is Darren Emerson, who quit Underworld and promptly became one of the most in-demand Dls in the country. In the next arch along, the professional hedonists who represent the Wall of Sound imprint are out in force with a live set from Dirty Beatniks and DJ support from Mekon and DJ Dan. Fri 27 Oct, The Arches.
Fluid House don DJ Q is gearing up for a few months of very fine guests, making this a night to watch. To start things off in fine style, party expert Junior Cartier, the housier guise of Jon Carter, is all set to get behind the decks. Sat 27 Oct, Alaska.
Radar Scott K, Spudd, MJC and Tim B have been bashing out the quality techno for two years now, and this is the first anniversary of their Art School residency. To celebrate the double whammy, the lads have invited Bob Brown to perform his first ever live set and Tresor stalwart Subhead to man the decks. Early arrivals will be treated to a free mix CD. Fri 20 Oct, The Glasgow School of Art.
19 Oct—2 Nov 2000 THE UST 89
