PC Star Trek Voyager Elite
Force
(Activision) £29.99
If the adventures of the U.S.S. Voyager are anything to go by, space has more rips and tears in it than a jakey‘s trousers. After being dragged a gazillion light years from home by an alien technology, it seems like every week in the TV series the poor starship falls through yet another hole in the space-time continuum, landing the crew in deep galactic excrement. And so it is with Star Trek Voyager Elite Force the latest computer game featuring the Federation's finest. This time the crew have been dumped in a space ship graveyard, badly damaged and utterly lost. Luckily, earlier in the week they had the presence of mind to set up an Elite Force of combat personnel, known as the Hazard Team, who will now do their utmost to explore the other floating hulks in the graveyard and protect the Voyager from marauding pirates.
Built using the Quake III engine, Elite Force is a fantastically ludicrous first-person shooter that follows the adventures of this Hazard Team. Though the Star Trek ethos of non-violent resolution tries vainly to control the proceedings, the large amount of quality weaponry and a story that constantly descends into vicious fire-fight make this the most action packed Star Trek title to date. The enemies, be they human, Klingon, Borg or simply unknown are numerous and beautifully created while the

environments are varied and imaginative, never failing to surprise. The missions are often short and simple, hurrying the story along apace, and feel like they were designed to fit between commercial breaks.
And this is what makes Elite Force so good. Everything reeks of the TV series. The corridors of the Voyager are eerily accurate, the jargon is like a second language and, with the cast lending their voices to the game, the whole thing feels like an extended TV episode. Even those with no knowledge of Voyager will fit right in, smiling with childish glee when stepping on the transporter for the
Elite Force multiplayer will be played at sci-fi conventions from now until eternity but don‘t let that put you off. This is first class gaming joy in a universe familiar to us all. (lain Davidson)
