CONTEMPORARY DANCE
The Curve Foundation
Tramway, Glasgow, Thu lZ-Sat 14 Oct, then touring.
It’s not easy being a small professional dance company in Scotland. And it’s testament to Ross Cooper’s artistic vision and tenacious spirit that The Curve Foundation has survived three years of scant funding and limited resources. Cooper formed the company in 1997, after performing with the likes of South Africa’s PACT Ballet, London City Ballet and Adventures in Motion Pictures. ‘I reached a point where although I deemed it important to do other people’s work, I also wanted to pursue my own thing,’ he says.
A series of short-term choreographic projects followed, which finally prompted Cooper to set up shop. ’It was a time thing really,’ he says. ‘I was never with the dancers long enough to build up a relationship where I could work quickly with them.’ Now Cooper has pulled together a group of dancers who display loyalty and talent in equal measure, and feels the time is right to let an outsider into the fold. Their 2000 season will feature a re-working of Cooper’s sexually-charged
‘Extreme and fragile’: Need we say more?
Extreme And Fragile which debuted last year, Jeux by the late Scottish Ballet founder Peter Darrell, and a new piece by rising Portuguese star Rui Graca.
’We’ve invited guest performers into the company before, but this is our first choreographic commission,’ says Cooper. 'l'd seen Rui's work before so I knew what I was getting, and knew that not only would it be good for my dancers to do, but important and interesting for people to see.’ (Kelly Apter)
