CLASSICAL: GLASGOW SAT 7 continued

I Two's Company Gallery Of Modern Art, Queen Street, 229 1996. 3—4pm. Free. The first of a series of informal concerts showcasing works by contemporary Scottish composers, with Hector Scott on violin and Shinobu Miki on clarinet. Today they are joined by cellist Claire Morton for works by Robert Sparey-Ghillies, Iain Matheson, Derek Ball, Tommy Fowler and Edward Harper. Many of the composers will be on hand to talk about their work, and you can take a seat or wander round the hall as they play.

I BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra MacRobert, University of Stirling, 01786 461081. 8pm. £17 (£14.50). A chamber recital by members of the orchestra featuring Stravinsky ’5 Suite ltalienne for Violin and Piano and Brahms’ Trio in B Major.

SUNDAY 8

I Grand Finale Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall Street, 287 5511. 7.30pm. £l6—£32.50. The Royal Concert Hall’s 10th anniversary celebrations draw to a close with this collaborative evening featuring the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, The Glasgow Phoenix Choir and soloists Claire Rutter, Jane Irwin, Peter Bronder and Christopher Purves. The orchestra will deliver Mozart’s Symphony No 40 and the combined forces follow with Beethoven’s Sympony No 9.

I Brass Spectacular RSAMD, 100 Renfrew Street, 332 5057. 1pm—2am. A day-long celebration of brass music, featuring masterclasses, workshops, solo recitals, band concerts and opportunities for audience participation. The event features music of many genres and incorporates the British Trombone Society Festival 2000. An afternoon of classical piano in the striking surroundings of the Music Room, just as Mackintosh intended.

I Fires Of Love Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 668 2019. 2.30pm. £7 (£5). Scotland’s early music quartet present a programme of dramatic and colourful music from Spain’s Golden Age. In the late 15th century, 800 years of Moorish occupation came to an end, and Granada’s Alhambra Palace was recaptured. This is their story . . .

THURSDAY 12 Glasgow

I Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall Street, 287 5511. 7.30pm. £10.25—£22.50. The RSNO jet off to Austria, inviting this guest orchestra to fill their slot for what promises to be an eclectic evening. Pianist Bernard D’Ascoli performs Mozart’s perennially popular Piano Concert No 24, with the prelude from Wagner’s only comedy Die Meistersingers von Nurnberg and Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliant Scheherazade completing the programme. Petr Altrichter is at the baton.

I Celebrity Recital Hutchesons’ Grammar School, 21 Beaton Road, Pollokshields, 8pm. £6 (£3). Pianist Julia Lynch and violinist Donnie Deacon perform works by Mozart, Brahms and Ravel. Nenty-year-old Glasgow wiinderkind Deacon began his professional career with the BT Scottish Ensemble aged just fourteen, went on to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School and has toured Europe almost constantly ever since.

I Mr McPall's Chamber Glasgow University, University Avenue, 330 4092. 1.10pm. Free. The genre-busting chamber group present ‘Piazolla @ Lunchtime’, a whistle stop journey through the work of Argentinean composer Astor Piazolla. From his fiery Revolucinoario to the poignant Soledad, Piazolla pulls together the tango tradition with his own classical training to produce a unique sound.

I Scottish Chamber Orchestra Younger Hall, North Street, 01334 474610. 7.45pm. £5.50—£15. It’s not often that conductor Joseph Swensen picks up his violin to play in front of an audience, but tonight you can enjoy his treatment of concertos by both Mozart and Brahms in the first of a series of three Bow and Baton concerts. Beethoven’s Octet with the SCO Wind Ensemble completes the bill.

I Midday Concert RSAMD, 100 Renfrew Street, 332 5057. 1pm. £4 (£2.50). The Chamber Music Group of Scotland present Lawrence Gill on clarinet, Robert Irvine on Violoncello and Graeme McNaught on piano. Together they perform Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio in B flat and Brahms’ Clarinet Trio in A minor.

SATURDAY 14

I BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra City Hall, Candleriggs, 287 5511. 7.30pm. £7—£16. Rising cellist star Alban Gerhardt joins the orchestra for Elgar’s wonderful Cello Concerto, a piece which he plays quite differently from the well- known Jacqueline du Pré version. Also on the bill is Britten’s hauntingly moving Sinfonia de Requiem and Walton’s Symphony No I. Emilio Pomarico is the conductor.

I BT Voices for Hospices Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall Street, 287 5511. 7.30pm. £8—£14. Part of a world- wide performance of Handel’s Messiah, in this case to raise money for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

I October Serenade Institut Francais d’Ecosse, 13 Randolph Crescent, 225 5366. 7.30pm. £4 (£2). Alto Mary Breatnach, flautist Jill Whitehead and violinist Martin Hughes perform Beethoven’s Serenade in D minor, Max Reger’s Serenade in G and a duet for violin and alto by Mozart.

I The Georgian Concert Society St Cecilia’s Hall, Niddry Street, 668 2019. 7.45pm. £10. The Society launch their 2000 season with a visit from American harpsichordist Lisa Goode Crawford. In this, the 250th anniversary year, she performs J .S. Bach’s keyboard masterpiece Goldberg Variations.
