LIVE SET Two Lone Swordsmen
Edinburgh: Nature at The Attic, Fri 22 Sep; Glasgow: Club 69 at Rocksy’s Basement, Sat 23 Sep. ‘People say I’m Mr Alternative, but ljust think I’ve found the ideal way to operate at being creative.’ Dubbed ’the Phil Spector of techno’, due not only to his arguable genius but also to his shy and retiring nature, Andrew Weatherall has at last emerged from the bunker style environment of the Rotters Golf Club Studios he shares with recording partner Keith Tenniswood. The reason? To unleash live, the aural delights inherent on the duo's latest Two Lone Swordsmen project, Tiny Reminders.

year, Tiny Reminders is the Swordsmen's sharpest offering to date. This is clearly due in part to Weatherall's reassessment of his celebrity status, not forgetting Tenniswood’s inspired use of the computer breakbeat interface. Having at last come to terms with being the man held responsible for creating modern dance music and the cult of the superstar DJ, Weatherall is now able to reflect on both the experiences of the past and the comparitive ease of his current working schedule. ’I am lucky to have gone through it and to have seen what it can do to people. At least now we’ve found a way of working where we’re not bothered by too many arseholes.’
Futher proof of what a little isolation can do for your creative energies is the extensive nationwide tour of intimate venues the Two Lone Swordsmen are currently undertaking. ’lt’s been really good so far,’ Weatherall says as he touches the nearest wooden surface, ‘we've done three gigs and each one has been progressively better.’ Indeed, if reports from the recent gig in Brighton are anything to go by, the Two Lone Swordsmen live experience is a blisteringly intense, bass-fuelled techno frenzy.
Created using two decks, three drum machines, a keyboard, a rack of FX and the Swordsmen's ’battle weapon’, a lock groove record with several loops cut into it, the three hour sets booked to take place in Glasgow and Edinburgh this month are destined to fulfil live dance music’s varied promise. Marking the start of their Carry On series with Carry On Casualty, the Luvlies suggest you dress appropriately in any costume relating to hospitals. White sheets daubed with ketchup should you choose to be injured, or perhaps a white coat to adopt that suave medic role. Music-wise, hard house courtesy of the residents Jared, Peter James and Tommy K in the main room and Scott G in the back room, will be just what the doctor ordered.

I Mingin' at Studio 24 (upstairs). 10.30pm—3am. £5. 23 Sep. Fortnightly. Altogether more pleasurable than the name would suggest, this is a gay-friendly house, trance and techno fest hosted by Brian Dempster and Alan Joy for a loyal crowd.
I The Mission at Studio 24. 11pm—3am. £5 (£4). 30 Sep. Fortnightly. Following in the tradition of The Mission (Victoria Street) with three floors of alternative sounds: head upstairs for goth and industrial goings-on, to the main floor for rock, nu metal and guitar-based sounds and up to the wee front room for general weirdness, sometimes on a skate, punk or indie slant.

I Phosphorescence at The Venue. 10.30pm--3am. £9 (£7). 30 Sep. Monthly. The biggest night yet at this goa trance party welcomes a special from Flying Rhino Records, with Domenic Lamb aka The Slinky Wizard playing the main room, supported by residents Pagan and Yoghurt Weaver.

I Scratch at The Venue (top floor). 11pm—3am. £7 (£5). 23 Sep. Monthly. Famed for bringing the finest hip hop to Edinburgh’s fair shores, the residents are riding high after Richie Rufftone’s winning the Scottish DMC heat and DJ Extra coming second. The skillz confirmed, Scratch also brings you breakers, open mic sessions, graffiti, videos and much more. I Shebang at Wilkie House. 11pm—3am. £10 (£8). 23 Sep. Monthly. Now into its second year, the all-women line-up at this deep and funky to hard house soirée just keeps getting stronger. Tonight special guest DJ Angel joins the Shebang girls Gail Sellars and Simone Black, who no doubt will work it like they mean it for the faithful, mixed crowd.
I Spectrum at Club Java. 10pm—3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. A quality shindig for Leithers and anyone with the good sense to make it down to this gorgeous venue. Rotating on a fortnightly basis, your host with the most, Jo Malik links paws with Eh! Wun on 23 Sep, while Unkle Fawaz, Mr Todd (Higher Ground) and furry friends do their bit on 30 Sep. Both teams showcase vinyl gold in the realms of hip hop, drum & bass, reggae, R&B and mellow house.

I Tease Age at The Citrus Club. llpm—3am. £4. Weekly. Now in its eighth year, this indie stalwart distinguished by a hint of soul and funk continues to draw a packed and sweaty crowd week in, week out. And if you hate smoking the new non- smoking policy in the bar area should please you no end.

I Ultragroove at La Belle Angele. Monthly. 10.30pm—3am. £10. 30 Sep. Monthly. Tonight disco don and all-round deep house connoisseur Joey Negro drops into the Ultragroove lounge. His first appearance in Edinburgh for over 4 years, the man responsible for a multitude of hits, including ‘Can’t Get High Without You’, will surely draw the hordes, so make sure to arrive early to avoid tears. Slip into something a little more uncomfortable and hightail it down to this swinging soirée where only the classiest showtunes get an airing. Thrill to the vocal delights of easy’s greatest stars, blow your Vegas dollars at the Stardust Casino and swig crazy cocktails like there’s no tomorrow.
