SPECIALIST SHOPPING Samba Fever
It's infectious and it doesn’t matter what you do, who you mix with, what protection you use or where you go. It just kinda gets into your blood and the next thing you know you are obsessed and you can't get rid of it — not that you'd want to. This overpowering, overwhelming and over-you-like-a-rash phenomenon is what is known in medical terms as Afro Brazilian, Afro Cuban and Latin music styles, and to those of us on the street it is known as samba and salsa.
As with any style of music the problems and the costs lie in buying the most suitable instruments to let you join in the fun. This has become slightly easier with shops in both Glasgow and Edinburgh creating the supply to meet the new demand for congas, repiniques, timbas, surdos and pa'ndeiros never mind all the sticks, straps and cases that go with them all. Alternatively, if you want your instruments made here in Scotland, you can contact Tatu Drums who make their samba instruments by hand, including drums, hand percussion and sticks. Another way to order is over the internet and this can be done through a company called One Voice Music, an arts organisation who promote the teaching and performance of Afro Brazilian and Afro Cuban music in the UK. They supply every instrument imaginable from the best companies such as Bauer and Contemporanea and set up workshops and courses in Brazilian and Cuban led by Ravin Jayasuriya and Dudu Tucci.
Workshops are an ideal place to learn everything from the basics to the finer techniques and introduce you to the music, instruments and the ever growing samba community.
