60 THE LIST 7—21 Sep 2000
LIVE PA
Madison Avenue
Glasgow: Bonkers, Fri 8 Sep.
It's always slightly disappointing when pop sensations turn out to be able to program their own sequencers, because they are supposed to be carefully packaged nitwits with a portly producer in the background counting the cash. One hit wonders Madison Avenue have the requisite crap moniker and pretty lady, but, unfortunately for connoisseurs of naff pop, have been quietly producing perfectly credible house music in their native Australia for donkeys years.
‘We've been producing together off and on for about ten years,’ confirms vocalist and producer Cheyne Coates. Obviously nothing has been as successful as ‘Don't Call Me Baby'. This is my first time up front singing. I did a quick guide vocal for the singer I'd written ’Don't Call Me Baby' for, and we just ended up keeping that, so it’s all a bit of an accident.’
Coates and partner in crime Andy Van are keen to return to Scotland for more DAT-backed PAs. 'Aberdeen, that’s a place in Scotland isn't it?’ Coates checks. 'Yeah, the people up there are really cool. People don't seem to treat you like a pop star, they’ll just shake your hand and have a bit of a chat. I find this being a bit famous a total spin out — you know, little girls having crying fits because they've touched my arm — and in Scotland you don‘t seem to have that at all, which is refreshing for me.’ (Jack Mottram) % Madison Avenue’s next single, ’Who The He// Are You?’ comes out on 25 Sep
