This virtuoso Flamenco guitarist has received acclaim from around the world, with performances at numerous arts festivals and a top three billing in the American magazine Guitar Player, as well as at home in Andalucia where he upholds the purist Flamenco tradition. Tonight’s performance, which features music from new group album El Alquimista, includes the full Flamenco spectacular with dancers, vocalist and his backing band.

Westbrook’s work covers opera, music- theatre, jazz and cabaret, including a current collaboration with wife and librettist Kate Westbrook, Platterback. The event is presented by Napier University’s Saturday Jazz School, Nujazz, in conjunction with The Queen’s Hall Education Project and also features tuition from The Queen’s Hall’s resident musicians Haftor Medboe, Eddie Severn, Paul Harrison, Mario Caribe and Alan Dale.

I lslay Jazz Festival Various venues, lslay. A full day ofjazz on the island kicks off with saxophonist Jim Tomlinson and pianist Brian Kellock at the Bridgend Hotel (noon, £3), followed by another duo with saxman Phil Bancroft and concertina maestro Simon Thoumire at the Port Askaig Hotel (1.15pm, £3). That should get those two well warmed up for their stint with John Rae's Celtic Feet at the Bunnahabhain Distillery (4pm, £6.50 (£3)), one of the highlights of the day. The main evening slot falls to another duo, singer Tam White and Brian Kellock, at the Bruichladdich Hall (£7 (£3)), while the late night action features Brazilltance at the same venue (10.30pm, £6 (£3)). The big showcase evening of this major week-long festival of Romany and Traveller music and culture. During the week there will be talks, a photography exhibition, poetry, storytelling, community education programmes, dances and many concerts, including extended performances from the groups and soloists featured at this gala. The host country is represented by Sheila Stewart, the doyenne of Scots Traveller tradition bearers; Tockolotoc are an eight- strong dance band from Prague; Gezja Horvath is a virtuoso guitarist from the Czech Republic; from Russia and Norway, diva Raya brings her Gypsy Legacy; from Poland, Kale Bala features a singer with five musicians and dancers; Pera Petrovitch is a superb singer and fiddler from Yugoslavia; Romano Drom are a Hungarian quartet that has evolved from Ando Drom - here a year or so ago at the Edinburgh Festival; and most colourful of all, Musafir are a tremendous troupe of 11 singers, musicians and dancers from Rajasthan.
