Piping In The Champions
What's that racket on Glasgow Green? There’s no escaping the skirl of the pipes as some of the world’s finest pipe bands gather to compete for the number one
spot.
Will there be many bands there? It’s a large-scale event with around 200 bands
competing.
Sounds a bit noisy? They're not all playing at once and anyway, you can do more than just listen. If you're feeling energetic, try out some country dancing, or explore the craft fair, funfair or even the bouncy castle.
I World Pipe Band Championships. Sat 72 Aug, 9am—4.45pm. £4.40 (£2.50); family ticket £ 72.50. Glasgow Green, 227 5474.
Shiver Me Timbers
Put on your eye patch and head down to The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour to join other like-minded sea terrorists. You can join in the fun with the pirate crew including Powder Keg Bill, Black Jake and Black Cass who will be telling stories of the sea, pirates and treasure as well as singing some hearty sea songs. And if that isn’t enough, you can become a real pirate by taking part in the treasure hunt, searching all the nooks and crannies of the Glenlee for the well-hidden golden sweetie.
There are lots of opportunities to win prizes, especially if you go dressed as a pirate, so look out your stripy top and gold hoop earring, but whatever you do, don't forget your parrot. (Jane Hamilton)
