NEW NIGHT
Boombox Edinburgh: The Venue, Sat 29 Jul.
Wailing there was, gnashing of teeth and blasphemous curses hurled into the night sky when Tribal Function ended its residency at The Venue earlier this year. Some said the underground house scene in the capital would never be the same again, but those gun-jumpers are just going to have to eat their words because the team behind Tribal are returning this month with a new club called Boombox. Now, many will argue that Boombox is just Tribal by another name. And they'd be right, save for a crucial differentiation resident DJ George T is keen to make. 'It's not so much a residents' night as a guest showcase,’ he says, ’We made a lot of friends through Tribal, so we wanted to continue to have a platform for these guys.’ Those who fear change can rest assured that the music policy will

stay the same. George T, Simone and H (now called Harry Let's Go after suffering one too many Steps jokes) will continue as residents although, as George explains, the emphasis has now shifted to focus on the celebrity players. Calling themselves the Chicago Ratpack, the city’s second generation of stars like Gene Farris, Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak will all be invited back to play Boombox. The monthly club will also take in its remit the charge of bringing up-and-coming DJs to our attention. lts launch sees the return of DJ Heather, who rocked Tribal two years ago and is now becoming a major force in the Chicago scene. 'This year’s going to be big for Heather.’ says George ’Like Mark Farina, she’s very well known in America but not so well known in Europe.‘ Something of a Shirley MacLaine figure, the honorary female member of the Ratpack, will be getting the Boombox off to a rowdy start.
