I Hi Karate at The Glasgow School of Art. 10pm—2am. £3. 28 Jul. Monthly. Andrew Divine and Neil McMillan are going monthly for the summer. The first of these special events features the residents going head to head with Glasgow’s premier turntablists the Freak Menoovers in hip hop meets dancehall, d&b and dirty funk soundclash. What’s more, the night will take place in the intimate environs of the Vic Bar, with a boosted sound system.
I Loose Joints at The 13th Note Club. 11pm—3am. £2. Weekly. Residents (eyebee) and (deecee) have shifted the old Booty Jam up a gear with a new concept night, just like a 70s album. The concept being to play a broad mix of dancefloor classics without overdoing the turntable technique, concentrating on the songs themselves.

I Wired at Destiny. 10pm—3am. £2 before 11pm; £3 after. Weekly. Casual night at the wrought-iron exhibition-cum- club, with a dancier music policy. This is the only time when denim and trainers are acceptable apparel here, so you don’t have to iron your Ben Sherman.

I Harem at The Tron Theatre Foyer Bar. 8pm-1am. £6 (£4) minimum donation. 4 Aug only. A charity fundraising extravaganza. First the event: DJs lending their turntable talents are Craig Reece (Loose Joints), dub tripsters Nepalese and old skool expert DJ Class. Their efforts will be complemented by Bedouin-themed interior design from Lee Sowerbutts and Natalie Astridge, plus Absolut cocktails from Chris Langan. As if that wasn’t enough, there will be prize draws, musical turns and even the occasional belly dancer. Now onto the worthy causes you will be supporting: PHACE West and Networks both supply HlV/AlDS awareness and support services, with PHACE West being a particular target of the anti-gay lobby. In summary: party on, raise money for charity and stick two fingers up to Brian Souter and his bigoted cronies.

OLD SCHOOL EXTRAVAGANZA Let's Go Back, Way
Back
Glasgow: Soundhaus, Sat 22 Jul. Let's go back. Let's take a trip. Erase from your mind all references to trance. Forget trip hop. And don't mention UK Garage. Ditch the marketing plans, the cover-mounted CDs, the branded bomber jackets. Bin the glowsticks, the novelty headgear and your copy of Ibiza Turbo Hits Vol. 3.
Put your hands in the air Glasgow
And remember why you started going clubbing in the first place. You might have been a clubber since the long lost halcyon days of trailing round dual carriageways at 2am in search of the sound system and the party, or your epiphany could have happened three weeks ago in a club the size of a small town. Either way, it's odds on that it was the music that did it for you.
In an attempt to both recapture the lost optimism of those early years, and to educate younger clubbers in the rich history they immerse themselves in every time they venture out of the house, Bosco, clubbing veteran of 'oh, eleven or twelve years' has started Let’s Go Back, Way Back, a night dedicated to the pleasures of house from 1987 to 1992. ’So many people are unaware of where house and techno really came from,’ he explains. ’There's just so much stuff from ‘87 to ‘92 that doesn't get played anymore, and I think that house at that time was a lot stronger than it is now. It was a lot
more original.’
The third Let's Go Back, featuring Glasgow house legend, former Subbie resident and current Mish-Mash mainman Oscar, looks set to blow the roof off the Soundhaus. ’Last time round we had Twitch, loads of acid stuff, a few anthems and things that haven't been played in years, but still stand the test of time,’ says Bosco. 'And it was nuts,’ he adds, laughing. 'We've got a brilliant sound system, a brilliant venue and a mad, up-for—it crowd.’ Which, when you strip away the merchandise and the fluff, is all a club needs. Let‘s go back, indeed.
