Food news fresh or frozen ALTHOUGH EVERY CITY block may not yet have a cappuccino place, Costa Coffee has expanded its franchise with a new outlet at 205 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Costa plans to open two more in Edinburgh, one on Princes Street and one on Lothian Road, in the next six months. Nearly simultaneously, two branches of the family-friendly Caffe Uno have opened in Edinburgh and Glasgow. This casual Italian style chain is owned by City Centre Restaurants, which is responsible for Garfunkels, and Est Est Est, among others. The capital version of Caffe Uno is on the Royal Mile (130 High Street) while Glasgow’s occupies former premises of the Jenny on Royal Exchange Square.
AS FOR LOCAL empire bLiilding, Loop restaurant occupies the ground floor of the new Bewley's Hotel on Bath Street in Glasgow. Co-owner Craig Johnson says it \VIH offer the same value-for-money fare as his Ingram Street operation (which has
yet to celebrate its first birthday). A reVised menu marks the opening of the new Loop. Of course, HOWie’s has a fifth branch on Waterloo Place, Edinburgh. Food Plantation’s Chris Young has set his Sights higher With a new restaurant, Ortega’s, on St Mary’s Street, around the corner from his popular cafe/ takeaway on the ROyal Mile.
ALSO NEW TO St Mary's Street is Lemongrass. One suspects that dining might take a back seat to liquid refreshment here judging from promotion of 'kicking ass' drinks specials and a roulette wheel which selects happy hour promos.
GORDON RAMSAY WAS back in the local press again after a Visit to watch the Tyson fight. Known for his own verbal pugilism, the multi-starred London restaurateur (and recently named chef of the year by Caterer magazmei IS SUbJE’CI of steady speCUlation about returning to his hometown Glasgow to open a business. The Sunday Herald’s restaurant reViewer Joanna Bythman recently implied his mere presence here might lift the quality of cooking throughout Scotland.
