You’ve seen them in the souvenir shops, you may even have one. A tacky memento of your holiday encased in plastic. But to Beryl, these snow globes are very special. They are the only form of communication she has
with her globe-trotting granny.
Spending her retirement travelling the world, Granny keeps in touch through her lively postcards and more importantly, the snow globes she sends to Beryl from her every destination. Using an inventive and imaginative set, Giant Productions give us a glimpse of Granny’s escapades as she catches the tap shows on Broadway, watches the millennium firework celebrations in Sydney or shivers in the Moscow snow. And it's a highly visual and magical affair. Originating from talks with nursery school children, the company’s latest devised show was written and directed by Andrew Dawson. With a target audience of 3-7-year—olds, the narrative is kept to a minimum with original music, special effects and carefully choreographed dance steps in place to bring the story to life. And for the most part, it works extremely well. A great cast, in particular Amanda Donald as Granny, adds the final sparkle.
However, the long-drawn-out dance sequences (think Gene Kelly in An American In Paris) and too few crowd-pleasing slapstick moments, don't quite hold the audience for the duration of the show. (Helen Monaghan)
