I Nils Petter Molvaer - Khmer The Old Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 287 551 1. 10.30pm. £l3. Norwegian trumpeter ace Nils Petter Molvaer‘s high-octane fusion of the dense funk textures of Miles Davis‘s early 70s directions with contemporary club culture was one of the festival‘s best ever late night gigs last time round, and their return visit should repeat the trick. The gig also features a set from RareFaction. led by pianist Paul Harrison and drummer/programmer Stuart Brown.

Lovano is comfortable in a range of settings. from free-wheeling improvisations through to the kind of subtle orchestral textures of his large ensemble , projects. and should be caught in full flight in this outing with his Trio. ascination and saxman Steve Slagle. I Brazilliance Merchant Square. Bell Street, 552 3552. l 1.30am. Free. Drummer Ken Mathieson is something of a Latin-jazz specialist. and leads his excellent band through an unhackneyed taste of authentic Brazilian grooves.

A new addition to the festival programme this year. focusing on the free improvisation end of the jazz spectrum. There are three separate performances today. beginning with a bit of double Dutch. and finishing back in the USA. The brilliant cellist Ernst Reijseger ( lpm) starts the action. followed by the inimitable Han Bennink (2.30pm) on solo percussion (and usually any handy theatre fittings as well). and it finishes with the Scottish debut of American pianist Myra Melford (4pm). The day ticket is good value (see next issue for preview).

I Yellowjackets The Old Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 287 551 l. 10.30pm. £13 (£6.50—£l 1). One of the best as well as the longest running of all the great American fusion bands. Yellow-jackets have remained remarkany intact over the years. with only the odd change of personnel. The latest version of the band shows one such change. with a new face in the drum chair in the shape of Marcus Baylor. who will line up alongside the tried and tested trio of Bob Mintzer (sax). Russell Ferrante (keyboards) and Jimmy Haslip (bass). Even for those not sold on fusion as a genre. this band’s sheer musicianship and creativity is irresistible.
