REVIEW DMC Scottish Heat

Edinburgh: The Liquid Room, Sun 28 May.

Scotland has always made a strong showing in the British DMC championships, and this year was no exception. The news that UK champ

Tony Vegas was not going to defend his title meant Scotland's Plus One, last

year’s runner-up, would be the man to meet and beat in London later this

month.

The eight turntablists who made it into the qualifying heats faced a near capacity Liquid Room and, as London's DJ Pogo warmed them up with a selection of classics, it was apparent that this crowd were going to be hard to please. Each contestant had six minutes to impress and nerves made short work of the first few. The first notable performance was from Scratch resident Gino who made a confident selection, but his tricks failed to fully

ignite the crowd's imagination.

In the end up it was a bit of a two horse race. A few technical glitches during the set from Glasgow’s Freak Menoovers member Nice put him out of the running despite a cocky style and some brave moves, so it was up to Extra and Rufftone to battle it out. DJ Extra made attempts to join his old scratching partner Plus One with a technically perfect set, but it lacked the spark of personality to fully wind up/win over the crowd. The final entrant Ritchie Rufftone, an old hand at such competitions, delivered a flawless performance loaded with deft tricks and a liberal dollop of showboating including some cheeky miming to scratched-in vocal samples and some old- fashioned under-the-leg crossfader action.

Taking a pair of Technics turntables home with him (like he hasn’t got a pair already) was Rufftone. Extra will join him in London for the UK heats and, who knows, in a month's time Scotland may have its own World

Mixing Champion. (Mark Robertson)
