A nice pair of Knox
Poetry is, alas, no great money-spinner. A few prizewinners eke out a living with the odd slender volume, but for the most part versifiers are reduced to daytime jobs and jotting out the odd profundity in spare evenings under the standard lamp. Unless of course they can combine it with another medium. Comedy is one area where the poet's muse can manifest itself in front of a wider audience but, even here, only the odd John Hegley or John Cooper Clark manage to imprint themselves on the public’s memory.
A recent exponent of this marginalised form in the comedic world is Robert Knox, who's played to increasingly receptive audiences over recent years. The secret, he assures us, is keeping his work approachable. ‘When I started out a couple of years back, I’d be introduced as a poet, and people would go "oh no",’ he says. ’But once you get them onside, they go with it and have a laugh. I write poems about things like bad haircuts, big women, and guys that go around playing the lad when they’re 28 and live with their parents. After all, everyone's had a bad haircut sometime.’ I’m reluctant to ask about the big women.
Knox is running his own club, Cabaret In The Cafe, a brave move, given the market commanded by the bigger promoters, but he feels he has an edge, since admission is free. The clubs feature young stand-ups and beginners in guest spots. 'Since the audience doesn’t pay seven quid to get in, everyone, performers and audiences, are more relaxed, and enjoy it more.’ (Steve Cramer)
