Smooth soul sister and vocalist around town, Subie Coleman, fronts her own outfit, which will saunter through a selection of soul and funk classics. DJ support comes from Jazz Joint regular Andy B.
I Big Beat La Belle Angele, Hastie’s Close, 225 7536. 10.30pm—3am. £2.50—£7. Big Beat are serving up a total funk feast this month as they welcome raw soul-funksters The Sugarman Three, featuring the talents of saxman Neal Sugarman, accompanied on Hammond organ, drums and guitar. Their latest album Soul Donkey is out now on Desco.

The first of a series of Saturday jazz events to mark the West End Festival featuring innovative, sax-fronted outfit the Rob Hall New Quartet (2—4pm), funky locals High Heel Sneakers (4.30—6.3()pm) and the Burt-McDonald Quartet with special guest Lol Coxhill (7—9pm).
I Carlos Pena Y Sus Muchachos Cottier Theatre, 93—95 Hyndland Street, 357 3868. 8pm. £12. The opening night of the West End Festival turns up the heat with a South American and salsa night featuring Venezuelan vocal star Carlos Pena and Glasgow-based reggae collective Zuba.
I George's Candlelit Club The Tall Ship At Glasgow Harbour, 100 Stobcross Road, 400 9856. 9pm. £6 (£5). Stalwart jazzman George Penman takes us through a vintage and Dixieland jazz selection. Pre-show suppers are available from The Pumphouse restaurant — to book, call 248 2884.

Edinburgh gets its first Latin ball and, rounding off all the other Caribbean capers, will be a live appearance from London ten-piece Conjunto Sabroso, who stick to their roots with the use of the specifically Cuban guitar, the ‘tres’, alongside bass, piano, trumpets and vocals. Homestyle funk and groove from this outfit, which features up-and-coming drummer Paddy Flaherty, who’s been a regular instalment at The Jazz Joint for some time now. I Keith Tippett 8: Julie Tippetts Cowane Centre, Cowane Street, 01786 443113. 8pm. £8 (£6). The only Scottish date for this husband and wife duo, who are at the forefront ofjazz improvisation. pianist, composer and bandleader Keith made his name leading the 50-piece Centipede ensemble, while vocalist Julie has pioneered the use of the voice as an improvisational instrument.

I Ken Peplowski Adelaide’s, 209 Bath Street, 248 4970. 8pm. £10 (£8). The expert US clarinettist (as well as tenor and alto saxophonist), whose repertoire ranges across the jazz idiom, returns to these shores.

I Martin Kershavv Quartet Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 538 7385. 9pm—3am. £4 (£3). Band on stage 9.30pm. A new outfit fronted by innovative saxman and Berklee graduate Kershaw, of Green Juice, Rarefaction and Groove Diggaz fame. Regular face around The Joint Jo Malik supplies the jazzy vinyl.
I Funk Junkies La Belle Angele, Hastie’s Close, 225 7536. 11pm—3am. £4 (£3). Laying on the funk, soul and jazz courtesy of the cream of local musicians, whose joint CV includes work with Elemental, Ugly Groove Movement and the Big Bang Big Band. DJ support in the same funk vein.
