ON YOUR DOORSTEP Everything you ever wanted to know about GREENBANK GARDEN
‘ 2"“ 4"...) . a
It doesn’t take long to reach the countryside from any part of Glasgow but it's nice to know there's a small piece of countryside right in the middle of suburbia. This oasis is known as Greenbank Garden, an intriguing walled garden situated Just next door to an 18th century merchant’s house.
Owned by The National Trust for Scotland, the garden is well maintained, with themes running throughout and an amazmg sundial right smack bang in the middle. Garden walks are led by the Head Gardener who will happily impart a wealth of information about the garden, its plants and flowers and the theories behind the layout.
The garden has a ’senses' theme with particular areas encouraging you to make the most of your five senses >— feel the surface and inhale the fragrance of unusual plants in the ’touch and smell' section, listen to the water falling over the statue in the Foam Garden in the '50und’ area, and enjoy the sight of brightly coloured flowers and plants. There is also a section of the garden which has been specially designed with disabled people in mind. This area has flower beds at varying heights and Widths to suit people with a wide range of gardening challenges whether it be back problems, sight impairment or being in a wheelchair. The area also plays host to various gardening, potting and planting demonstrations which take place throughout the year.
Once you have looked round the garden, watched a demonstration or taken time out on one of the many benches, you can have a browse in the shop, have a brew in the tea room or sign up and join the National Trust for Scotland on the spot because with places like this, it’s well worth it.
