UEST DJ Ray Keith
Edinburgh: Manga at La Belle Angele, Fri 19 May. Purveyor of dark and dirty drum 8: bass, DJ/producer Ray Keith has been at the forefront of the underground scene for quite some time. Prolific to say the least, he now has three labels, Dread, Penny Black and UFO, accommodating his output and the work of new artists and collaborators. Still working behind the counter at London’s institutional Black Market Records, we asked the famous shop assistant how it feels to be one of the old-school heroes of drum & bass? ‘Less of the old. thanks. There's a few of us — Kenny Ken, Mickey Finn, Fabio and Grooverider — that have been around from day one. We all grew up together musically and we all started playing house music. I still feel that I've got something to contribute and it’s nice to be considered an innovator, an ambassador for my scene.‘ Now in a position to steer the future of drum 8: bass. his recent ‘Something Out There’ EP on UFO, heralds a movement back to live vocal and percussion. As Keith says, 'Vocal is the way forward. We’ve established an on- going way of putting out records and now we can think about going in on live instruments and getting singers into the studio.’ The upcoming Alien Encounter LP also promises more vocal tracks and live breaks and Keith is hoping to start up a live project towards the end of the year. His appearance at Scotland‘s premiere drum 8. bass night, Manga, has been long anticipated. Booked to appear over a year ago, Keith missed the flight from London, a debacle he‘s keen not to repeat. 'Don’t worry’, he assures us 'l'll make sure I get to the airport at least two hours early.‘
