So young Prince William will be coming to Edinburgh University next year. Now the next in line to the throne, after the regal ears will no doubt add to the royal family’s distinguished academic record, but before he affords us all a laugh by mastering Joined-up writing and getting a 2:1, there’s something else to giggle about within the college’s ivy-clad walls. It's the location for one of the semi finals of the UK—xvrde Open Mic Awards.
You've got to hand it to these young comics. Student audiences can be pretty (ileUle‘.'0. The kids don’t have to get up in the morning, so they can get absolutely Schindler's. This year’s crop of ten hopefuls, whittled down from a much wider field, includes two Scottish contenders, Eleanor Mason Brown from Berwick and Des Clarke from Glasgow, as well as a permanent resident, Lou Chawner, himself a student of Napier University. Hopefully we’ll see a local crowd to cheer them on before they proceed to London and then such exotic climes as Hull and Swansea
PFC'JIOUS winners have enjoyed a fair degree of success. Last year's Victor Danny Bhoy, appears regularly on the 77 O’ C/ock Show. Despite this, he’s actually quite funny. Other well-known names produced by the competition are Lee Mack, Paul Foot, Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. This episode of the long running COi-npetiticn wrll be hosted by experienced Canadian comic, Tony Law and among the judges will be our esteemed editor, Mark Fisher. (Steve Cramer)
