Glasgow has traditionally given the myriad forms of drum & has short shrift. The Alkemie gang take a low key approach, hoping to sneak a few fast breaks into the scene. Jack Mottram asks some questions, then answers them.

Who on earth are 'the Alkemie gang'? Sound like a bunch of crims. Er, no. Alkemie is a brand new pre-club featuring the DJ talents of Tania Swift, Poise, Spore and Mark.
They sound vaguely familiar . . . You must have been listening to Scotland's newest radio station, the popular Beat 106. Tania Swift is one half of the team that thumps out the best d & b available. llpm—lam on Sundays, if you’re interested.
Cheers. Weren't we talking about a pre-club? Just trying to provide a little background. The Alkemists were also involved in Turbulence, the drum & bass night that rocked the Art School until last year.
Did you say drum 8: bass? That's not house or techno. I don't understand. Quite. Despite the successes of the aforementioned Turbulence and the big name guest frenzy that was Elements, the whomping bass and skittering breaks have never gained a foothold in
Glasgow’s nightlife, presumably because
the west coast kids are entrenched in the established house and techno scenes.
Why are you telling us about Alkemie, then? Because the night is different to its forebears; the idea is to provide shelter from the techno storm for the city's d & b fans, and the pre-club format is ideally suited to the DJs aim to spin tracks from all the various sub- genres.
Which are? The music policy is set to
include everything from your 'intelligent'
(but don't let Bukem hear you call it that), jazz-inflected head-nodding stuff, right through to gut-shaking bass monsters with scary vocal snippets, via two step, hard step and any other steps they’ve invented in the last couple of weeks.
Nice one.
A/kemie launches on Fri 28 Apr, [downstairs at The 13th Note Cafe.

I Ouch at The Temple. 10pm—3am. £10. 30 Apr only. The kids seem to be looking forward to this one, thanks to top guests Groove Armada’s DJ set. Don’t forget to arrive in time for the Ouch regulars, though, and soulsters Engine in particular. See Preview.

I Voyeurism at Archaos. llpm—3am. £5 (£3). Weekly. A perv’s paradise, with peep hole performances, non-specific fake shagging and a general atmosphere of muckiness.
