COMEDY REVIEW
The Stand Comedy Club Glasgow: The Stand, Sat 15Apr *whH:
Arnold Brown: Precise humour and attention to detail
It is a well-known fact that Glasgow audiences are notoriously difficult to please, so the opportunity to see some comedians squirm at the new Stand
Comedy Club has its attractions.
Unfortunately this goes all pear-shaped when compere Susan Morrison warms up a rather subdued and slightly apprehensive Glasgow audience, locates her targets with ease, and starts the rain of gags and laughter. With the crowd suitably chortling she hands over to the first comic of the evening Craig Hill who delivers a note perfect performance that takes the crowd on a musical trip of images. comparisons and impersonations. The similarity of Celine Dion and Johnny Mathis will remain with a lot of
people for a long time.
Graeme Thomas ably fills the open spot for the evening, and is followed by John Gillick who comes across with a fine line in Glasgow humour. From Sudden Infant Death Syndrome to mothers, this comic keeps it going even when interrupted by the obligatory and unfunny heckler.
Headliner for the evening is Arnold Brown whose act is a combination of slow precise humour and great attention to detail from the obvious to the ridiculous, occasionally touching on a controversial issue or two. After the previous acts it takes a while to get into this totally different and intellectual style of comedy. A few restless people appear to take a bit longer than others. but that's the risk you take with stand up comedy.
