Human Condition Records Special
This year has already seen the fifth birthday of two of Scotland’s better known independent record labels; Glasgow’s Chemikal Underground and Creeping Bent. Now it’s the turn of the grandaddy of all Scottish indie labels, Edinburgh’s Human Condition, who celebrate ten years in the mUSIC business next month With a big old knees-up at The Pleasance, Edinburgh.
As a tribute to the longeVity of the label, Beat 106’s Jim Gellatiy Will be featuring a handful of Human Condition acts in session on his show, and also talking to the label’s founder Jamie Watson. ’I remember hearing their first release ten years ago when l was working at Moray Firth Radio and being pleasantly Surprised,’ says Gellatiy. ’Some indie labels are good, some are shite. Human Condition definitely fall into the first category.’
Since their inception in 1990, Human Condition have stuck by their prinCiples of putting out records that they
like, and to hell With the money Side of things, an witude that Gellatiy applauds. ’You can’t make any
’But that’s kind of missing the point, isn’t it?’
All small record labels have a financial sob story to tell, and Human Condition’s fiscal fish that got away involves a debut Single called ’Queen Of The Troubled Teens’ by a certain bunch of scruffy young lads that couldn’t play called IdleWild. ’I remember thinking it was pretty shit at the time,’ says Gellatiy. ’But IdleWild w0uldn’t be where they are today Without Human Condition.’
However, Gellatiy reckons that the future ls looking brighter for champions of independent music. ’The way music’s gomg With the internet, it would be fabulous if labels like Human Condition c0u|d get stronger and stronger, and actually make some money,’ he says. ’People like Jamie Watson ObVIOUSIy know a hell of a lot more about mUSIC than people at major labels.’
Which basically sums up the Whole pomt of labels like Human Condition, and Why ten years in a particularly fickle business should be celebrated. (Doug Johnstone) I lim Gellat/y will be talking to Human Condition ’5 Jamie Watson on his show on Tue 9 May Eugene Kelly, Imperial Racing Club and Obaben will be in session on Thu 7 7 May The Human Condition 70th Birthday Party is at The Pleasance, Edinburgh on Fri 5 May
