If you’ve ever wondered what it was like living in a Glasgow tenement in the early 1900's then you need wonder no more. The National Trust for Scotland have preserved a typical house in its true style right down to the original
furnishings and belongings.
The Tenement House was originally owned by shorthand typist Agnes Toward and her mother from 1911 right through to 1975 when Miss Toward passed away. It was then by chance that this treasure trove, which had been barely altered since the turn of the century, was discovered by Anna Davidson who bought the house and its contents. The National Trust for Scotland acquired the house in 1982 and took over the task of preserving this fragment of history.
Looking much the same from the outside as any other Glasgow tenement, the inside quickly transports you back to a time before microwaves, washing machines and even electric lighting. Everything in the house has been preserved exactly as it once was, the only change being the wallpaper which is an accurate reproduction. Walking through the rooms it's easy to imagine domestic life almost a century ago -- from the large black range in the kitchen and the Victorian furniture and rosewood piano in the parlour to the straw mattress beds in the bedroom and recesses. An assortment of personal effects help bring Agnes and her mother back to life, with photographs dotted around the parlour, a mourning dress hanging in the hall, bone handled toothbrushes in the bathroom and even some jam in the kitchen cupboard dated 1929, surroonded by their well-worn kitchen utensils and the obligatory jeelie pot.
The history of the house and the Towards’ life is fascinating and has been preserved to perfection by The National Trust. Go along and see how ordinary Glaswegian folk used to live or take your Granny and let her go back to the days when she would hear gossip in the wash hoose and watch the weans play kick
