Primed Fri 21 Apr—Sat 13 May. Will Silk curates an exhibition of abstract paintings by four Edinburgh artists. Raymond Mulligan layers oils and glazes over thick paper soaked in linseed: James Lumsden’s paintings are offset by dark panels and the gallery walls; Andrew Mackenzie reworks, redraws and repaints on board, paper or canvas and Paul Keir’s canvases create an architecture of space both in and outside the painting’s edges.

Things Until Sat 15 Apr. Curated by Krzyztof Fijalkowski of Norwich Gallery, this exhibition focuses on assemblage, collage and photography in Britain since 1936. Featured artists include Eileen Agar, Clive Barker, Tim Head, Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton and Roland Penrose. Artworks: Faces And Things Until Sat 27 May. Aimed primarily at young children, this hands-on exhibition explores themes of portraiture and still life.
Spectrum: Aspects Of The City Of Edinburgh's Fine Art Collection Until Sat 27 May. A range of works drawn from the City Of Edinburgh’s fine art collection including contemporary and historic topographical views of the city and recent acquisitions.

British Art Show 5 Until Sat 3 Jun. Free. (BASS Information line 529 3795). The prestigious British Art Show opens in galleries across Edinburgh before touring to Southampton, Cardiff and Birmingham. On show at the City Art Centre are Hilary Lloyd who examines personal identity; Jim Lambie creates new work comprising refuse bags and pots of gloss paint; David Shrigley exhibits a selection of sculptures and Wolfgang Tillmans shows work from his series Soldiers — The Nineties. Johnny Spencer appears at all British Art Show venues with a series of Information Panels exploring the history and culture of Edinburgh‘s galleries and Amikan Toren tours all the venues once the show has opened to decide where to place his Armchair Paintings.

The newly refurbished Collective Gallery opens with the work of live artists.
