TECHNO CLUB Radar
Glasgow: weekly Fris at The Cross Bar, and Fri 14 Apr at the Glasgow School of
Art.
You could be forgiven for thinking that techno in Glasgow begins and ends with events from the Slam and Test organisations, but, for just over a year, a third collective have been making inroads into the territory of the big
two.
’Radar started with us DJing at parties,’ explains resident Scott K. 'We felt that the nightlife had got a bit stale in terms of techno over the past two or three years with too many clubs seeing commercial house as an easy way of getting punters through the door. This meant that there was an ever-growing minority in Glasgow - including ourselves - looking for
something a bit different.’
Having identified a gap in the market for a fresh techno night, Radar took the traditional route for nascent clubs, garnering praise for their no frills weekly pre-club residency — an evening based on having fun, rather than propagating the po-faced attitude of the techno purists - before playing a part in the rejuvenation of The Glasgow School of Art, with high calibre guests joining Scott, Tim B, Spudd and MJC behind the decks.
'We have had successes with guests in the past.’ says Scott. 'Desert Storm was well-attended and the Rephlex night with Richard D James (aka the Aphex Twin) was rammed, but we don't want to become known as the kind of 015 who book guests to guarantee a big crowd, so for the time being we'd rather try to build up a following and stand on our own two
feet.’
This no-nonsense attitude means that the Radar crew, who already have an uncanny knack for whipping up a party atmosphere without compromsmg their commitment to the best music the techno scene has to offer, should soon find themselves an established, if bite-sized, presence on the west coast club scene.
