Bleibtreu. 80 mins. Young Berlin punk Lola (Potentc) has twenty minutes to raise 100,000 marks to save her stupid, but beloved boyfriend from murderous drug dealers. Not an easy task, but writer/director Tom 'I‘wyker gives Lola three chances and helps her pound the streets with a thumping, self-composed techno soundtrack. Using every style trick in the IXX)I(, Twyker astounds with an adrenaline rush of a movie. Edinburgh: Cameo. Falkirk: FI‘II Cinema. Scream 2 (18) *** (Wes Craven, US, 1998) Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Leiv Schreibcr. 120 mins. Two years after the Woodsboro murders, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) is now a college student, trying to piece her life back together. But when an audience member is slashed to death during the premiere of horror movie Stab, the nightmare begins again. The film fails to fully integrate the many in-jokey references to horror sequel conventions, but it's still streets ahead of what passes for horror nowadays. Glasgow: Odeon.

Scream 3 (18) iii (Wes Craven, US, 2000) Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette. 116 mins. Preview of the third instalment doesn't have Kevin Williamson onboard writing, but Craven plays up the series' self-referential element as the cast and crew of the third Stab film are stalked by you know which masked slasher. A film within a film about other films. Glasgow: Odeon.

Scream (18) iii"): (Wes Craven, US, 1996) Neve Campbell, Courtency Cox, Drew Barrymore. 111 mins. The teenagers of Woodsboro know they're typical stalker fodder, so when a killer hits town, they gather in an enormous house to watch horror movies as the real bad guy gets closer. Self- conscious references are good fun, the opening sequence is genuine white-knuckle material, and if you know the rules you'll find it perfectly scary and funny. Glasgow: ()deon.

Shall We Dance? (PG) **** (Masayuki Suo, Japan, 1997) Koji Yakusho, 'I‘amiyo Kusakari. 135 mins. The biggest Japanese hit ever at the US box office, this upbeat movie might grab some of the mainstream crowd in the same way as I! Posiino. Shoei leads a predictable life at work and at home until he is transformed by his new hobby - ballroom dancing. A real charmer, with a hidden sense of emotional maturity. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

The Sixth Sense (15) **** (M. Night Shyamalan, US, 1999) Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Olivia Williams, Toni Collette. 107 mins. Nine-year-old Cole Sear (Osment) has a terrible secret. He can see the dead walking the earth; they’re around him all the time and it's scary as hell. Child psvchologist Malcolm Crowe (Willis) takes his case and spends all of his time, at the expense of his marriage to Anna (Olivia Williams). attempting to help the boy. Shyamalan's clever script suggests much and explains little, keeping the audience guessing. Glasgow; Showcase. Edinburgh: UCI. Greenock: Waterfront. Paisley: Showcase. Stirling: Carlton.

Sleepy Hollow (15) *irkt (Tim Burton, US, 1999) Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken. 105 mins. During the final days of 1799 ambitious young policeman Ichabod Crane IDepp) is sent to the fog-shrouded village of Sleepy Ilollow to investigate a series of decapitations, but his scientific beliefs are shaken when he Comes face to space with the Ileadless Horseman. Burton gives Washington Irving‘s Gothic folktale a distinctly British colouring. as he borrows merrily from the Ilammer films of the 50s and ()(ls, while Depp brings the right note of comedy to the dark proceedings. Stirling: MacRobert. Sliding Doors (15) *ttt (Peter IIowitt, UK, 1998) Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch. 99mins. Mousy-haired PR executive Ilelen gets fired and discovers her

handsome Irish boyfriend is a two-timer. Blonde PR woman Helen is more successful and dates a handsome Scot. This sharply observed romantic comedy splits Helen‘s life in two when she misses/catches a tube train. Utterly entertaining, and one of the best British movies of 1998. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Solaris (PG) *ivki (Andrei Tarkovsky, USSR, 1972) Natalya Bondarchuk, Donatas Banionis, Yuri Yarvet. 165 mins. It's been called the Russian 2001, but this typically heavy-going but rewarding Tarkovsky film is an adaptation of the great sci-fl writer Stanislaw Lem's novel. It concerns not contact with extra-terrestrial life, but death in the form of ghosts from the pasts of astronauts aboard a space station orbiting a remote planet. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. See review. Selected release.

Snow Day (PG) iii (Chris Kock, US, 2000) Chevy Chase, Pam Grier, John Schneider. 90 mins. Weatherman 'I‘om Brandston's (Chase) ratings are sliding as the public reject his traditional routine in favour of slick network rival Chad Symmonz (Schneider). His network manager Tina (Grier) orders Tom to spice up his act by wearing comic book costumes, all of which troubles pale in comparison to family man Tom ‘5 domestic stresses. Chase confounds expectations to appear, for the first time in years, in a movie that is actually funny. See review. Selected release.

Space Jam (U) it (Joe Pytka, US, 1996) Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Wayne Knight. 87 mins. Nasty alien cartoons have captured Bugs Bunny and are going to enslave the Looney Tunes in their amusement park on Moron Mountain, but Bugs has the brainwave of challenging them to a basketball game and enlisting the talents of Michael Jordan for his team. Lacking the class of Who Framed Roger Rabbit." and the pace of a real basketball game, SpuceJum should divert the kids on Saturday mornings, even though the jokes and effects are tired from over-use. Stirling: Carlton.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (U) *** (George Lucas, US, 1999) Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman. 132 mins. On the surface, the plot structure isn't a million light years away from the original Star Il'ars. In visual terms, The Phantom Menace stands alone in the cinematic universe. At times you'd think there was more animation than live action on screen - and maybe it's this toning down of the human element that has left the film lacking soul. Galashiels: Pavilion.

Starship Troopers (15) ***** (Paul Verhoeven, US, 1997) Casper Van Dien. Dina Meyer, Denise Richards. 129 mins. Way in the future, Earth is run by a crypto- fascist regime, and the members of the Galactic Armed Forces are sent into space to fight a race of alien bugs hell-bent on wiping out humanity. The computer animation work is first rate and, despite its gory slice ‘n‘ dice violence, one reading of the movie's sub~text is decidedly anti- militaristic. Edinburgh: Odeon.

The Story of Us (15) ** (Rob Reiner, US, 2000) Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Reiner. 95mins. Willis and Pfeiffer's Ben and Katie Jordan are a couple whose relationship has grown stale. After 15 years of marriage, their once attractive quirks have hardened into irritations. Despairing of their future together, they pack their kids off to summer camp and agree to a trial separation. But is there any juice left in the marriage? Maybe, but there's little in this risible romantic comedy. See review. General release.

The Talented Mr Ripley (15) *ttt (Anthony Minghella. US’UK, 2000) Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth PaItrow. 139

, mins. Tom Ripley (Damon) befriends then I adopts the life of rich kid Dickie Greenleaf

(Law). Ripley being an infamous literary murderer, it‘s no surprise how he goes about claiming Dickie's ex pat lifestyle in late 50s Italy, but Minghella's film - and llighsmith's novel is so much more than a tale of murder; it's also about lust, love and the interchangeability of identities. Classy all the way. Glasgow: ()deon At The Quay, UCI. Edinburgh: ABC, Odeon. East Kilbride: UCI. Irvine: Magnum Theatre.
