created a definitive record, is to be regarded with caution. Still, this Oscar-winning first release from Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation adds a further chapter to the dossier of testimonies; that of the Hungarian Jews, who were amongst the last to be rounded up by the Nazis and taken to the camps. Glasgow: GF'I‘. Les Convoyeurs Attendent (The Carriers Are Waiting) (15) *** (Benoit Mariage, Belgium, 2000) Benoit Poelvoorde, Jean- Francois Devigne. 94 mins. Playing the struggling patriarch determined to make something of himselfand his family, Benoit Poelvoorde (the serial killer in Man Bites Dog) has decided his reluctant son (Jean- Francois Devigne) will beat the world record for opening and closing a door within 24 hours: the present record stands at around 40,000. It's an offbeat device used to work up that old mainstay of father/son tension. but the film requires more than a figurative scenario and vivid locations to sustain its 90 minutes. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. Les Diaboliques (15) ***** (Henri- Georges Clou2ot, France. 1955) Simone Signoret, Vera Clouzot, Paul Meurisse. 107 mins. Fiendishly clever and much imitated thriller in which a tyrannical schoolmaster is murdered by his wife and mistress. Except that he doesn‘t stay dead for long. The famous bathroom finale has frequently been borrowed, but this is the original and best. Edinburgh: Edinburgh Film Guild at the Filmhousc. Let's Mambo (E Allora Mambo) (15) (Luca Pcllcgrini. l999) Luca Bizzari. Paolo Kessisoglu, Luciana Littizzetto. 95 mins. A spirited tale of the chaos that ensues when a family man who has suddenly become seriously wealthy due to a banking error attempts to sustain a double life. The comedy turns into nightmare for Stefano, the businessman, when his two wives become friends. Part of the Italian Film Festival. Glasgow: GI’I'. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. Libero Burro (15) (Sergio Castcllitto. 1999) Sergio Castellitto, Margaret Mazzantini, Michael Piccoli. 100 mins. The title of this film is the name of a reformed Iout from the centre-south of Italy who is convinced that money leads to happiness. Through the story, he gradually comes to realise many surprising things about himself and the world around him. Part of the Italian Film Festival. Glasgow: GI’I‘. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. Limbo (15) *vrii (John Sayles, US, 1999) David Strathairn, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Vanessa Martinez. 128 mins. Sayles isn‘t a filmmaker to toe the line, so when he goes to Alaska to shoot a film in which three individuals become marooned in the wilderness. it‘s unsurprising than what he comes up with is a well—crafted. solidly told tale that‘s less action adventure and more psychologicaI/sociological study of people and place. And Sayles takes his time, casing us into the environment and the lives of the principal characters, before the forces of nature give the plot its dramatic twist. Stirling: MacRobert. The Limey (18) *rkhk (Steven Sodcrberglt, US, 1999) Terence Stamp, Peter Fonda, Luis Guzman. 89 mins. Stamp's criminal cockney reject, Wilson is off his manor and in Los Angeles to avenge his daughter’s death in Sodcrbergh's take on 605 cinema and the British crime movie. But this is no simple revenge caper, although the action thrills and the one-liners are smart. The casting nus icons Stamp and Fonda as Wilson's nemesis, record producer Terry Valentine. is inspired. Kirkcaldy: Adam Smith. Lost In Space (PG) tit (Stephen Hopkins, US. 1998) William Ilurt. Gary Oldman, Matt Le Blane. ltl9 mins. I‘he cult TV series for the ()Us gets a 90s make-over and, despite the state-of—thc-art special effects, it's every bit as cheesy as the original. Professor John Robinson (Hurt) and his family are sent to colonise the distant planet of Alpha Prime. but an act of sabotage causes them to spin into the stratosphere. Certain performances are so irritating that most viewers will sympathise with ()ldnrrtn's craven villain. Edinburgh: Cameo. The Lost Lover (L'amante Perduto) (IS) (Roberto Faenza, 1999) Ciaran Ilinds. Juliet
Aubrey, Stuart Buncc. 95 mins. Faenza’s latest film concerns a Tel Aviv garage owner who watches approvineg as his wife’s love for a French Jew breaks her out of a psychological trauma. Unfortunately, the lover disappears and the husband has to search for the younger man. Part of the Italian Film Festival. Glasgow: GF’I‘. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.
A Love (Un Amore) (15) (Gianluca Maria Tavarelli. 1999) Luciano Federico, Fabrizio Gifuni, Lorenza lndovina. 105 mins. This bittersweet film traces the history of a love which is off and on again over a period of 20 years. Sara and Marco discover they cannot live apart for long, as the film climaxes on the first day of 2000 at a New Year’s party. Part of the Italian Film Festival. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.
Love, Honour 8r Obey (18) id (Dominic Anciano, Ray Burdis, UK, 2000) Ray Winston, Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller, Kathy Burke. 97 mins. Written, produced, directed by and starring Anciano and Burdis, this gangster fiick has a tightly structured, woefully generic plot that allowed the formidable cast to improvise their dialogue from moment to moment. When this works, the tone is at once darkly comic and frighteningly violent; but when it doesn't, the individual scenes fall flat and the hell- for-leather plotting quickly loses momentum. General release.
Lovers Of The Arctic Circle (15) *ttt (Julio Medem, Spain, 1999) Fele Martinez, Najwa Nimri, Nancho Novo. 104 mins. When cight-year-old Otto spots Ana outside the school gates, it's love at first sight, but life ’5 tragedies intervene, however, and the pair are set apart - until years later when both are drawn. irrepressibly, to a Finnish cottage just inside the Arctic Circle. Medem, whose expressive style was honed in Wars. The Red Squirrel and Tiara, has crafted a beguiling love story - as strange and original as it is romantic — which surely places Medem in the top rank of European directors. Stirling: MacRobert.
Love's Labour's Lost (U) tie (Kenneth Branagh, US, 2000) Kenneth Branagh, Alicia Silverstone, Adrian Lester. 93 mins. Branagh’s attempt to make Shakespeare multiplex-friendly will shock textual purists for he has taken the early, wordy, romantic comedy, cut 70 per cent of its dialogue and filled the holes with show tunes from the 30s and 40s. Branagh's most audacious, and frankly maddest. Shakespeare adaptation to date proves to be a funny, engaging, and consistently entertaining trifle. Glasgow: Odeon At The Quay. Showcase. Edinburgh: Odeon. Greenock: Waterfront. Wishaw: Arrow Multiplex.
Lucky and Zorba (La Gabbianella E II Gatto) (U) (Enzo D'Alo, 1998) 78 mins. This animated feature broke Italian box office records on release. The story concerns the friendship of a cat and a seagull, and although based on a feel-good fairy tale aimed at kids. the film's laced with enough satire to keep mum and dad happy too. Part of the Italian Film Festival. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.
I Magnolia (18) **** (Paul Thomas Anderson, US. 2000) Julianne Moore,
William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman. John C. Reilly, Tom Cruise. 185 mins. P.T. Anderson's follow-up to his superb 70s LA porn industry flick, Boogie Nights is a snapshot of the lives of a dozen residents of LA's San Fernando Valley . Their stories are sad, funny and moving without ever becoming overly-sentimental and Anderson's script is full of humble humanity and beautifully observed moments. And the quite stunning miraculous conclusion is audacious but it works - the same can be said of the whole film. Glasgow: Odeon, ()deon At The Quay, Showcase. UCI. Edinburgh: Filmhouse, UGC Cinemas. Mansfield Park (15) *irrk (Patricia Rozetna, US, 2000) Frances O'Connor. Alessandro Nivola, Jonny Ice Miller. 112 mins. Rozema has supplemented her adaptation with extracts from Jane Austen‘s own letters and journals, turning the novel’s heroine — a poor girl who is adopted by wealthy relatives and taken to live in the grand house of the title — into a quick- witted, sharp-tongucd free spirit budding writer. The film may not be strictly faithful to the novel. but there‘s no mistaking its
