I Nomad at Wilkie House. 10.30pm-3am. £8. 17 Mar. Monthly. After a roasting set from Rennie Pilgrem last month, tonight sees Matthew B - of Layo and Bushwaka! fame — take a few hours to DJ to the masses. Normally residing at the cool, credible (shock! the two can go together) and downright essential London club The End, the pair recently released Law Life on The End Recordings to great acclaim. Down at the label, they call their style ‘tech breaks’ (as opposed to Mr C’s tech house), and his own DJing style is hip hop-esque, with lots of old skool chopping and is more deep and organic rather than hard and analoguey. If you want to know any more, you’ll just have to go and check it out yourself. See you there.
I Planet Earth at The Citrus. 10.30pm-3am. £4. Weekly. From 1976-1989, it’s all that new romantic, pop and punk stuff that made our lives so enjoyable way back when.
I Pure at The Venue. 10.30pm—3am. £9 (£7). 3 Mar. Fortnightly. Loathed as we are to use dance jargon cliches (no really, we are), we simply cannot find any other way to describe the enormous talents of Dave Clarke other than ‘techno god’. ‘Doyen’, perhaps, or ‘Lord paramount’. Whatever, Dave’s at the top of the talent pyramid when it comes to blinding sets that blow you away whether you’re in the middle of the sweaty dancefioor, or watching his superspeed hand action (on the decks, you of the filthy mind). Also, the official music policy for this club is one of the best we’ve heard in a long while: ‘low frequency funk and breakbeats modulated with pre-skool breaks, soul, disco’. As it should be, eh?
I Radio Babylon at La Belle Angele. 10.30pm—3am. £9 (£7). 10 Mar. Monthly. La Belle adds this mighty fine night to its rota, upping its kudos in the process. And guess what? They have Ireland’s finest, David Holmes along as their guest tonight. He’ll be joining The Merry Pranksters, Barry Jams, Kelvin Bridge and The Baler for (and we quote) ‘a groovin’ institution, a relaxed vibe with a bit of quark, strangeness and charm thrown in.’ Should make for an essential night, then.
I Salsa Celtica at The Bongo Club. 9.30pm-3am. £7 (£6). 3 Mar only. Live band and DJs from Club Latino.
I Salsa Viva at The Venue (top floor). 10.30pm—3am. £3 before 11pm; £5 after. 3 Mar. Monthly. From the old classics to the newest releases in salsa, merengue and Latin.
I Skyscraper at The Venue (top floor). 10pm—3am. £4. 10 Mar. Fortnightly. It’s all deep and funky house at Skyscraper with Martin Valentine and Steven Wanless residing. Tonight Stuart Duncan joins the ressies on a more progressive tip.
I Sublime at The Potterrow. 10pm-3am. £8 (£6). 3 Mar. Monthly. It’s about time that residents Kev Wright and ldge were given the space to muck about on the Potterrow soundsystem with being encumbered by annoying guests. A night of massive trance and techno from the boys. I Sublime at Wilkie House. 10.30pm-3am. £9 (£7). 10 Mar. Fortnightly. Tonight is the German techno producer Oliver Lieb’s debut at the club. Described as the bloke who was making trance years before it was even invented, he’s got a weighty techno cum trance sound that doesn’t mess about, which has won him an awful lot of admirers, think Billy Nasty and Sublime’s own ldge (who will be supporting him tonight). Make sure that you wander through the back for some of Fleix and Gary Mac’s superb electro funk express action. Check out http://www.sublime-uk.demon.co.uk/.
I Subtle Logic at Studio 24. llpm—3am. £7 (£4 ‘beasts from the swamp’). 17 Mar. Monthly. Tonight’s theme at this techno fest is ajungle party, with all the mad bad creatures from the jungle coming out to play. The guest tonight is Jel Ford (London) and he’ll be playing a three hour set, joining residents Ross Rod and Martin, and they’re hoping to get Murf up as well (the).
I Trancelucent at The Venue. 10.30pm-3am. £5 (£4). 10 Mar. Fortnightly. 50 successful that they’ve moved into a fortnightly slot, this club
continues to provide cutting edge trance with residents Pete Anderson upstairs and in The Cooler, Dave S with smooth house grooves. See Four Play.
I Ultfaé'roove at La Belle Angele. 10.30pm-3am. £5. 3 Mar. Monthly. One of the best garage DJs around is Ashley Beedle and Ultragroove up their kudos more than a few notches tonight when he guests at their club. Those into smooth, quality house and garage will no doubt be glad that this club is back after a month’s break due to the refurb of La Belle.
I Up! at Studio 24. llpm—3am. £6. 3 Mar. Monthly. A brand new night offering funky chunky house to make you dance. There’ll be loads of added extras like Trollettes selling chewing gum, sweeties et al and a chill out room with videos and couches.
