techno and hard as nails house to a seriously appreciative crowd, who cheer each and every chopped up mix.

Big beat has taken something of a bashing of late, with luminaries like Jon Carter jumping ship, nu skool breaks types distancmg themselves from the genre and the post-Fatboy Slim deluge of breaks-by-numbers pap engendering a sense of fatigue among the clubbers who took to the sound in the first place. That is not to say that the style is dead and buried, as nights like Midi Hi-Fi prove; instead, the end of overexposure has sorted the wheat from the chaff.
According to Paul C, the man behind the Ninja Tune tour events at The Arches and co~promoter of Midi Hi-Fi, there seemed to be a gap in the market for a quality big beat event: ’The atmosphere at shows by Coldcut or The Herbaliser was always amazing, you’d see people there that you don‘t tend to see out clubbing, and we wanted to bring that to a regular club event.’
The Midi Hi-Fi ethos, then, goes further than showcasing the talents of the more credible big beat DJs, ’It seems that if you want to go clubbing in Glasgow,’ explains Paul, ’it comes down to a chorce between a cheesy handbag night in a big club, or sornewl’iere dark, underground, precrous and po-faced. We wanted to combine quality music With something that avoided being too precious.’
This commitment to injecting a bit of fun into serious clubbing seems to have paid off, and, with only one night under their belt featuring resrdent Krash Slaughta and Jake Wherry of The Herbaliser, the Midi Hi-Fi crew seem to have caused something of a stir, with word of mouth publicity practically guaranteeing a successful series of events. In fact, it seems that the keen response took the promoters by surprise: ’We were expecting to play to 300 or so like-minded people, but for some reason we filled the club, and everyone was obviously
having a great time.’
If clubbing seems a polarised business, with good fun and good music co- existing all too rarely, forthcoming guest appearances from the likes of listenable turntablist First Rate (pictured with Ian Brown) and the rare chance to catch George Evelyn of the reclusive Nightmares On Wax, combined with a heady, booze-fuelled atmosphere, Midi Hi—Fi looks set to provide the middle ground between hedonisrn and musical appreciation. If you fancy brushing up your bon bon shaking skills, Absolut Salsa classes run from 8pm, and it’s good for the soul too, as proceeds go to Amnesty International.

I Slam And Bugged Out! at Qudos (QMU). 10pm—3am. £8. 11 Mar. Monthly. The super club juggernaut returns with the usual high calibre line-up. This time around the residents from Fenetik are joined by James Holroyd, Layo and Bushwacka! performing some hard live sounds and the hugely talented Justin Robertson, who should bridge the gap between house, techno and whatever else seems ap ropriate with his usual aplomb. I Tablist Lounge at Glasgow School of Art. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3.50). Weekly. A new addition to the Art School Saturday extravaganza, the Freak Menoovers present a four deck scratch attack to go with the Divine/My Machines madness.
I Triumph at The Tunnel. 10.30pm—3.30am. £9 (£7). Weekly. Colin Tevendale and Steven McCreery supply the dressed-up glamour kids with progressive house and trance in the main room while Kevin MacFarlane and Stephen Lee mix up garage, disco and vocal house in Room Two. If you’re not wearing awfully nice clothes, however, don’t expect to get in.
I 2 Tons of Fun at Club Budda. 11pm—3am. £6. Weekly. Geoff Montford and Chris Harris get funky with a bang up- to-date selection of disco house.

Stevie Smith breaks out the club classics, garage and house in the main room while Raymond Woods cools things down with hip hop and R&B in Room Two.
