The Mystec crew have been steadily gaining a name for themselves around town as purveyors of the finest in bass-fuelled electronic music. Jack Mottram gets the lowdown.
What's it all about then? The DIS behind ,
the various Mystec nights, named, with innuendo in mind, Dirty Wriggles and Good Hands, spotted something of a gap in the market for the various musical forms that have evolved out of the early Detroit techno scene.
That's a bit vague . . . Fair enough. The Mystec sound takes in anything and everything with a basis in techno, taking in the precise classics sporadically released by Derrick May back in the day, underground hits from Claude Young or Kenny Larkin and bang up to date tracks from the Detroit Bass scene, currently pumping out of low slung automobiles in the Motor City. In addition to the deep techno, you can expect the sort of new skool electro currently pouring out of the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia that spurns cheesy synth runs and retrogressive stylings in favour of sparse production underpinned by gut- wrenching basslines — influenced by, in case you hadn't guessed, the good old Detroit sound.
That's all very well. but why should I care? in short, Mystec deserve recognition by dint of the fact that they are practically alone in championing their music of choice — you might hear this stuff slipped into sets at other nights around the city, but the combination of back-to-basics technical techno and forward~looking European electronics is pretty much unique in Glasgow.
Aren‘t techno types all obsessive bores who hate having fun? No comment. While Mystec might have roots in a mildly prescriptive desire to bring a sidelined sound to the masses, their events tend to have something of a party atmosphere, with a gradual descent into all-out hedonism.
I’m sold. Where can I join the fun? The flagship night runs at Rocksy’s Basement out in Paisley, home to the legendary Club 69, the night that inspired the Mystec crew in the first place. And, before you start fretting about taxis, a bus service is included in the ticket price to ferry you there and back.

The new Friday line-up at Alaska includes some of the best DJ talent in Glasgow. The collective includes Paul ‘Pee Wee’ Welsh (Radio Clyde), Mark (Straight Ahead), Kev (Goodfoot) and Shu Hirata (World Service) who are set to bring together disparate styles from soul, deep funk and retro breaks in the bar area to future jazz and house in the main room. by a live set from Mike Dred. The guest DJs are Rephlex Master Control and the Aphex TWin himself, Richard D. James spinning warped electro, dark drum & bass and generally being a genius/saviour of modern music.

Smooth disco courtesy of Andy Unger, Rodger, Pete Murphy and Wayne Dixon, who are keen to show that disco doesn’t just mean Daft Punk and their filter happy peers, preferring instead the genuine classics the revivalists sample and, well, ripped off.

Tonight sees the first date of the Trace Elements Tour from Automatic Records, with Ibrahim Alfa playing a live set of brand new material from his forthcoming long player. Fresh from opening Slave, Mary Kiani continues to bring the godmother of banging house nights to Glasgow.

Kris Keegan and AJ rock the main room with house and garage, Ian Thompson whacks out the the best in underground garage and dance classics in Betty’s, while members in the Skybar are treated to Paul Traynor’s smooth R&B mix. In addition, the Archaos cast of performers bring a touch of the circus to Clubland with fire- eaters, stilt-walkers and dare devil trapeze artistry.

Don’t be put off by the fact that the club runs out of a restaurant basement, Club 69 is one of the best places in Britain to hear deep low- down techno. Academia de Salsa provide free dance tuition from 11pm, after which DJ Duncanario takes over with a frantic Latin mix matched by equally frantic dance action. I Divine at Glasgow School of Art. £4 (£3.50). 10pm-2.30am. Weekly. Come this summer, Divine will have been providing a dose of Northern, funk and sixties classics for ten years, but the kids still can’t get enough.
