I Freddie King Quintet Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 538 7385. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3). Renowned vocalist around Edinburgh and London and father of a whole jazz family, King brings his quintet to the Jazz Joint. DJs Lewis, Fawaz and Sly Si take it in turns to do their duty on decks.

I Marty Grosz The Tall Ship At Glasgow Harbour, 100 Stobcross Road. 3390631. 9pm. £10. The renowned US rhythm guitarist visits Harbour Jazz for their second event. Acclaimed for his
singing as well as his acoustic guitar abilities, Grosz has been involved in Soprano Summit with Kenny Davem and The Classic Jazz Quartet with Dick Sudhalter. Another American visitation for Harbour Jazz, as sax0phonist Tracy and keyboardist DeGreg team up for an evening’s entertainment. Both artists are very active in jazz education in the USA, with Tracy holding a professorship at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. I Read Quarters Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 538 7385. 10pm—3am. £5. HQ gets all grown-up and starts using its proper name. Still the same storming hip hop line-up though, with turntable technicians Extra and Kimo Cutz and a floorshow of rapping, rhythm, moves and grooves from the Scotland Yard crew.
I El Cometa All-Stars Big Beat, The Bongo Club, 14 New Street, 558 7604. 10.30pm-3am. £5—£7. Edinburgh’s finest Latin-jazz exponents, made up from members of Salsa Celtica, the East Coast Jazz Project and Freshly Squeezed, bear down with heavy urban Latin rhythms. DJ support from Big Beat regulars Simon, Stuart and Tinku.

I Bobby Wishart Jazztet The Tall Ship At Glasgow Harbour, 100 Stobcross Road, 339 0631. 9pm. £6. Wishart, one of Scotland’s leading jazz saxophonists, pays tribute to the music of the great Benny Golson. Golson’s work with Art Blakey and in The Jazztet, the band he co-led with Art Farmer, did much to help shape the development of hard bop in the late 50$. The Loungers celebrate their third birthday with the help of dancehall reggae diva Nubia, who appears with a full, live band, and a host of regulars, including Carlos Pena and AJ of Blacka’nized. Eh? Wun! and Joseph Malik keep the tables a turning.
