I Sublime at Wilkie House. 10.30pm-3am. £8 (£6). 25 Feb. Fortnightly. Last year, a few revellers found themselves in a wet and muddy field, celebrating Sublime’s fourth birthday (any excuse, eh?). Suddenly, a stranger got up behind the decks and unleashed one of the most unbelievable epic trance sets, the kind that would make your great aunt throw down her Kenny G albums in disgust, hitch up her tweed twin set and demand a podium to dance upon. The promoters tracked down said DJ and have invited David Begg (from Aberdeen of all places) to guest tonight. If it all gets a bit much, head through to the Blue Room where the boys at work continue to fly the flag for quality electro. nu skool and other brilliant nonsense. Futuristica

ANDY SHAW

Edinburgh DJ, producer and club promoter .Io Malik has rolled with the punches thrown by the local scene for ten years now. During this time he’s had some pretty heavy blows to contend with, not least the recent demise of Cafe Graffiti which was home to the supremely popular Lizzard Lounge. Only a few months ago it seemed to Malik that the game must up, but then a tempting offer from La Belle Angele came along.

'La Belle approached me and said they were going to spend a lot of money renovating the club,’ Malik explains, ’and that sold me. They’re going to up the capacity to 500 and turn the place into the main venue in

Edinburgh.’

And one of the heavyweight attractions of the new improved venue will undoubtedly be Malik's new club Futuristica. Featuring a strictly modern playlist, he believes that the sound of now comes in recognition of the diversity of world music. Influenced by drum 8: bass, Afro beats, hip hop and house, Malik believes that ’music's changed over the past two years, you can't really define it, it's just reflecting how all the barriers have been broken down. Also, European music is really coming over now, mainly from Germany and Scandinavia. People have been calling it future jazz or new wave jazz, personally I just call it new music.’

Malik will be joined on the decks by international player, Daryl G, a DJ who Malik describes as his ideal 'sparring partner’, and as with all Malik's projects, the live dimension continues to play a vital role with Sassafras guesting on the first night. ‘It doesn’t matter whether the band is signed or unsigned,’ claims Malik. 'All that matters is that you know the band is making new and exciting music’. (Catherine Bromley)
