Vibe
Vibe controllers: Mad Ambassador and Archie
When the words reggae dancehall are mentioned a rather vivid image of buxom Jamaican ladies shaking their booty in the air comes to mind. Sadly this is not an image usually associated with the Edinburgh club scene. Granted, we lack the tropical climate and the raw atmosphere of the Jamaican sound system, but all this could be
set to change with the imminent rise of a new reggae dancehall and R&B night.
Brought to the capital by local DJ and promoter DJ Kid (aka Peter Symington), Vibe is designed to fill a gaping hole in the clubbing market. Resident dancehall DJ at the club, Mad Ambassador (aka Gary Bullen), is keen to support this: ‘Nobody's playing as fresh R&B tunes as Archie. R&B is really coming through now and Edinburgh needs a club to do this justice. And I know I'm the only one playing reggae dancehall in Edinburgh so we're
definitely unique in what we're doing.’
Originating in the clubs and more importantly, the streets of Jamaica, reggae danchall has been popular in the UK
since the early 905 but only now is it beginning to achieve crossover success. When it comes to describing the scene,
Bullen struggles to define a constantly changing sound: 'lt’s hard to put your finger on. The style varies from roots reggae to more up-tempo beats. The rhythms are always changing so that you end up with loads of different tempos, including say, your lovers selection, your hard-core selection and so on.‘
With plans to secure top name guests such as Chris Goldfinger and Trevor Nelson, and live acts from London and Jamaica in the next two months, Vibe is most certainly the club to watch. (Catherine Bromley) I Vibe is weekly Sundays at The Liquid Room.
