Special Favours? Sounds a bit rude . . . Grow up The name refers to the fact that you can't expect any favours from the Dis, so don’t bother hassling them to play the indie pap drunken studes love so much.
Get them. I like the Happy Mondays. Fair enough, I suppose, but Mingo-go
and Bosom (Kinky Peanut to her friends,
apparently) are on a mission to provide sounds you haven't heard before, from obscure Japanese big beat to trashy pop. Eclecticism is the name of the game here.
Isn't that D] code for dragging out a few rock favourites to stop the kids getting bored? Indeed so, but the emphasis here is on removing restrictions: if it sounds good, they‘ll play it, whether the track is a familiar favourite or off a one-sided 78 on an Estonian hip hop label.
One for the trainspotters and serious musos then? Lord no, this is avant-fun, with a healthy emphasis on the latter. The self-styled goddesses of sound aren’t out to wow you with their box full of peculiar tunes, the idea is to have a right old knees up that doesn't rely on the obvious funk classic/indie hit/Fatboy bleedin' Slim paradigm to get the kids on the floor.
A counterbalance to Hi Karate upstairs, then . . . Precisely. The days of suffering extreme culture shock when popping downstairs from Andy Divine and Neil Macmillan’s fast break extravaganza are over - Special Favours is a club in its own right, rather than a place to take a breather between bouts of dancing.

Kris Keegan and AJ rock the main room with house and garage, Ian Thompson whacks out the the best in underground garage and dance classics in Betty’s, while members in the Skybar (Glasgow’s answer to the Met Bar, or so they claim in the press release) are treated to Paul Traynor’s smooth R&B mix. In addition, the Archaos cast of performers bring a touch of the circus to Clubland with fire-eaters, stilt-walkers and dare devil trapeze artistry.

I Atomic at The Temple. 11pm—3am. £7 (£5). 12 Feb. Fortnightly. The club known as Atomic Baby in Edinburgh switches coasts, but maintains the cracking atmosphere, featuring crisp and shiny hard house from the ever-reliable Michael Kilkie and Zammo.
I Bennet's at Bennet’s. 11.30pm—3am. £5. Weekly. Shaun with a commercial dance set and Annie with a blend of 705 and 80s hits. Gay.
I Slam And Bugged Out! Present at Qudos (QMU). 11pm—3am. £8. 12 Feb. Monthly. The super club juggernaut returns with the usual high calibre line up. This time around Stuart Meikle represents Slam and Rob Bright does the honours for Bugged Out! As if that wasn’t enough, the mighty Andy Weatherall puts in an appearance, and Silicone Soul preview their album with a set augmented by live percussion.

I Club 69 at Rocksy’s Basement. 10pm-2.30am (midnight curfew). £5 (members only). Weekly. The team behind the Rub-A-Dub record shop with the deepest underground sounds. Don’t be put off by the fact that the club runs out of a restaurant basement, Club 69 is one of the best places in Britain to hear deep low-down techno. I Freelance Science at Alaska. 11pm—3am. £10. 5 Feb. Monthly. Stuart and Orde combine lengthy stints at three 12105 with live electronic manipulations thanks to a couple of samplers and a drum machine. Unsurprisingly, the night gets packed out quick smart, so be sure to get down to Alaska early.

I Groovejet at Trash. 1 1pm—3am. £7 (£5). Weekly. Brothers Matt and Pete knock out quality house and garage in the main room, while Paul N’Jie does his R&B thing in Room Two.

Jilkes and Hatch hammer out cool, deadly funked-up techno and hard as nails house to a seriously appreciative crowd, who cheer each and every chopped up mix. Andy Unger presents a selection of soul, funk and disco augmented with original samples and loops to guarantee a new take on familiar sounds.

Colin Tevendale and Steven McCreery supply the dressed-up glamour kids with progressive house and trance in the main room while Kevin MacFarlane and Stephen Lee mix up garage, disco and vocal house in Room Two.
