Back on home ground: Bruce Morton
The reputation of Glasgow’s State Bar as the centre of the city's comedy circuit
can only be enhanced by this gig. lt kicks off with resident compere Billy Bankers
and, although repeated references to cock sizes and ‘taking it up the shitter' is not everyone's comic cuppa, he ably warms up the audience for this evening's
triple bill.
First up is Australian Ian Macdonald telling tales of his Antipodean ancestors before segueing into comic quips about koalas and kangaroos. He swiftly moves on to outline the vagaries of language by relating his experiences teaching English across the globe. In particular his observations about the polysemic use
of the ’F' word strike a rich comic chord.
There's a short open slot given up to Colin Simpson, who relates a number of 'true stories' about shopping and porn. He’s obviously still learning his trade, and he'd do well to pay attention to star attraction Bruce Morton.
Back in Glasgow after a period down south, Morton revels in the luxury of not having to speak slowly to be understood. He rifles through one hour of culturally specific humour about football and sectarianism before reminiscing about life in Scotland and the pains and pleasures of adolescence. If Morton's material is not as fresh as it could be, his style and delivery compensate. As his lanky 6ft frame sprawls across the floor, the locals lap it up, transforming the packed out cellar bar into a heaving mass of Glaswegians ahooping and

tackles from football pundit Bob ‘the gob’ Doolally, with support from Mitch Benn. There‘s also an open spot competition for any aspiring laughmongers among you.
