Marcel (Mazzarella) lies in bed thinking about his life, and reflects back less on his own actions than of those in the wealthy late 19th’ear1y 20th century salon culture in which he moved. Ruiz's adaptation of Proust‘s final volume of Remembrance Of Things Past captures brilliantly the tenuousness and subjectivity of memory — aided and abetted by his trademark lateral tracking shots. technical correlatives to Proust's thinking. Glasgow: Gi’l‘.

Trainspotting (18) (Danny Boyle. UK. 1995) Ewan McGregor. Ewen Bremner. Robert Carlyle. Jonny Lee Miller. 93 mins. John Hodge's screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh's novel. keeping the episodic structure of junkie scenes for the first half. before concentrating more on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction. creative soundtrack and acting that's off-the- rails excellent. A cinematic blast from beginning to end. which also shows a complex — and true - understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking. Edinburgh: Eilmhouse.

Vacas (15) (Julia Medem. Spain. 1992) Emma Saurez. Carmelo Gomez. Ana Torrent. 96 mins. Over a period of four years. stage director Andre Gregory worked with a group of actors for irregular ‘undress rehearsal' run-throughs of David Mamet's adaptation of Chekhov's Uncle lirny'a. Ultimately. however. the impeccable performances and Chekhov's drama win the day. resulting in a good film. but excellent theatre. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
The War Zone (18) *tit (Tim Roth. UK. 1999) Ray Winstone. Lara Belmont. Freddie Cunliffe. Tilda Swinton. 99 mins. And Winterbottom utilises every trick in the Great Filmmaker’s Manual to create a visual treat worthy of its title. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Cameo.
The World Is Not Enough (12) met (Michael Apted. US/UK. 1999) Pierce Brosnan. Robert Carlyle. Denise Richards. 128 mins. A nuclear scientist with shapely curves. an international terrorist impervious to pain. a slick British spy who delivers his innuendo with a touch of apology in his voice. The nineteenth Bond movie is distinguished by a number of plot twists not usually squeezed in between spectacular but uninspired action set pieces, which increases involvement with the peripheral characters. General release.
Yellow Submarine (U) (George Dunning. UK. 1967) The voices and music of the Beatles. 90 mins. The Fab Four save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. A real period piece these days. this exercise in garish psychedelic animation still remains a colourful (and safely non-addictive) trip for the kiddies. while everyone can sing along with the tunes.
