This is the latest addition to our National Museums and the only one dedicated solely to Scotland‘s history and heritage. The building contains five thematically-arranged exhibitions, moving from pre-history, through the Industrial Revolution, to the present day, at which point national heroes such as Billy Connolly and Elaine C. Smith get involved.

Sentimental Journey — A History Of Souvenirs Until Sun 9 Jan. From the earliest forms of souvenirs dating from Pilgrim times to the tacky seaside kiss- me-quick hat, this fascinating exhibition traces the history of the souvenir with a display of over 500 objects.
Beyond Bounds - Containers Until Tue 4 Jan. The first stage of a four-part exhibition focusing on artists’ books. Containers features experimental bindings as diverse as pigskin and aircraft wreckage. In Alphabet. four British artists explore the use of text in artists' books. The final stage of the exhibition, Structure And Surface looks at traditionally~crafted books and book-bindings by top contemporary binders.
The AIDS Memorial Quilts Exhibition Until Sun 30 Jan. An exhibition organised by the Names Project (UK) comprising fourteen quilts goes on display in remembrance and celebration of the lives of people who have died from AIDS. The AIDS Memorial Quilt was first seen in the UK on World AIDS Day in London, 1988. Eartth Paradise — The Mountain In Chinese Decorative Art Until Thu 11
May. An exhibition exploring the use of mountains in Chinese decorative art,
featuring works in lacquer. wood, jade. ceramics and print.
Millennium Clock Until Sun 31 Dec. A chance to view Russian mechanical sculptor Eduard Bersudsky‘s work in progress as he creates a millennium clock for the museum, a kinetic sculpture, measuring nine metres high. The clock will chime for the first time at noon on 1 Jan 2000 to ring in the new century. Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre Until Sun 23 Jan. To complement the construction of the ‘millennium clock’, Eduard Bersudsky and Tatiana Jakovskaia‘s kinetic theatre
goes on display. Created from carved wood and scrap metal. the sculpture tells stories of the human spirit struggling against life and death. ;
