Name? Gene Farris. Age? Won't reveal, but more than

thirty, less than forty.

How should we know him? Gene‘s the one that, in just about every interview he has ever done, calls Scotland his ‘second home'. Also, he's from Chicago and an integral part of that whole mid- 90$ explosion that rocked dance music. What. an earthquake of some sort? Er, not quite. After the initial house thing * went global and then supersonic in the late 805, the Chicago scene went into hibernation. It wasn't until the early/mid-QOs when the likes of

Cajmere, Sneak, Derrick C and pals developed the Chicago house sound that the windy city was put back on the map. And Gene was a part of all that. ‘Chicago house'. good God. another genre? This one's been around for a while, actually (unlike ‘smash house‘ circa the latest Mixmag for Pete's sake). It‘s very funky, slightly banging, really danceable house that goes down a

treat wherever it's played.

Right, so where does this Gene diaracter fit In? Have you been in a cave for the past five years? He is well known in Scotland due to playing both Glasgow and Edinburgh every few months, and he has released on the

very cool Soma label.

So he’s a Soma boy through and through? Not quite. He started on

Relief, put out a couple of twelve inch singles on Forces Inc in Germany as well as on Cajemere's groundbreaking

Cajual print, and then on Soma. He started his own Farris Wheel Records

last year, which has had many folk sitting up and taking notice.

01, producer and label manager. . That’s a few caps. Isn't it? At least he never wears them to the side . . .
