Gaggin' For It

Edinburgh: Threequarters Sports Cafe, Fri 3 and 10 Dec.

Laugh at the size of his tackle: Dougie Dunlop

Sport and comedy have always gone together - and not just on the football pitch. So it seems a natural progression for the Threequarters Sports Cafe in Edinburgh's Grassmarket to add comedy to its list of events. They‘ve teamed Up with the Gilded Balloon for a pair of nights, punnily named Gaggin' For It, to have us laughing before Christmas.

Dougie Dunlop is just one of the comedians appearing on Friday 3 December. ‘This is an excellent venue for comedy,‘ he reckons. ‘lt’s tried and tested because it was a comedy venue during the Festival this year.’ So what kind of material will Dunlop be delivering on the day? ’Well, it's mainly observational comedy, but I do the odd impression to spice things up a bit. I’ll definitely be doing my Bill McLaren and Gavin Hastings.’

Which is apt considering the Sports Cafe is owned by three Scottish international rugby players - Rowan Shepherd, Gregor Townsend and Derek Stark. They have high hopes for the comedy. 'If these two nights go well, we're looking to make this a regular feature in the new year,’ says Stark.

And has he ever thought of giving up stand off and trying stand up? 'Not me, no,’ he laughs, ‘but some of the rugby lads are very, very funny. I'm not sure the world is ready for them yet though - their humour is probably best left in the showers, or the toilet, where it belongs.’ (Morag Fleming)

8.15pm. £6—£7 (Ll—£5). See Fri 10. Jane Mackay takes over the microphone as compere.
