I Benn Clatworthy Edinburgh Thistle Hotel, Leith Street, 556 0111. 8.30pm. £5 (£4). It’s only the second visit to Edinburgh for this sax player, who was a pupil of Ronnie Scott’s and has played with many of the greats since moving to America. Expect to hear Monk and Latin— influenced numbers, as well as a few self-penned compositions.
I Rain Forest Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3). In a bit of an exit from the Jazz Joint’s usual music policy, the doors have been opened to this five-piece rootsy reggae outfit. The man behind the decks is Unkle Fawaz.

I Basic Collective Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £5. Edinburgh diva Nicky King provides the vocals to the Basic Collective’s mellow soul-jazz sound. Other band members are Aqua Bassino, Stevie Christie, Willy Mollason and Sly Si. Sly Si keeps himself busy by manning the decks too.
I Midnight Blue Cafe Graffiti, East London Street, 557 8003. 10pm-2am. £5. A ’Sister Soul’ night featuring the vocal talents of Nicky King, Cathie Rae and Subie Coleman, with accompaniment from the Midnight Blue Band. Stuart, of the Thelonius DJs, mans the decks.

I Yumbambe MacRobert, University of Stirling, 01786 461081. 10.30pm. £6 (£3). An impressively young and talented line-up, including the ubiquitous Paul Harrison, make up this full-on Latino jazz collective, featuring horn and percussion sections.
SATURDAY 4 Edinburgh I Push Big Beat, Cafe Graffiti, East London Street, 557 8003. 9.30pm-2am. £7 (£6). Funky dancefloor jazz courtesy of these Big Beat favourites, who have shared a stage with the likes of Weldon Irvine and Maceo Parker. DJ support comes from the Thelonious DJ team of Simon and Stuart. I Swirler Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. lOpm-3am. £5. Jazz meetz street beatz in Kevin McKenzie’s latest project, which also features Gina Rae of The Lanterns on vocals and Phil and Tom Bancroft on sax and drums. DJ action comes from Andy B.

I Hung Drawn Quartet RGI Kelly Gallery, 118 Douglas Street, 248 6386. 2pm. Free. The second of three recitals to accompany painter HamishMaeDonald’s show of landscapes at the gallery, features the clever arrangements and inventive soloing of this Glasgow-based saxophone quartet.

I Sanskrit Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10—11pm. £4 (£3). Another new addition to the Jazz Joint’s roster, featuring a lights/visuals/DJs/live performance-type fusion in a dub, roots and drum ’n’ bass style. Enjoy.
MONDAY 6 Edinburgh I Altered Beatz Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £4 (£3). Electronic break-beat jazz from Green Juice, featuring Martin Kershaw, Willy Mollason and Sly Si, plus rapper Frosty J, who fill alternate week slots at this jazz meets drum ’n’ bass night - DJ Input mans the decks.

I Nigel Clark 8: The Hot Club Tron Theatre Restaurant, 63 Trongate, 287 5511. 9pm. £17.95 including a two- course meal (5/£3.50 for limited availability standing tickets). Clark gets the chance to showcase his guitar-playing skills to swinging effect in the context of a Django Reinhardt-styled selection, fused with soloing and improvisation. Part of Basement Jazz’s ‘Jazz Dinners’ series - dinner is available from 7pm.

I HQ Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £4. A slightly reformed night to replace The Dynamic Duo Show after the loss of Plus One to The Scratch Perverts, featuring Extra and Kimo Cutz on the decks and the Scotland Yard collective providing rapping and rhythm.
WEDNESDAY 8 Glasgow
I Lol Coxhill 8: Pat Thomas 13th Note Cafe, King Street, 553 1638. 9.15pm. £4. A welcome return for saxophonist Coxhill, one of the doyens of the UK free improvisation and experimental music scene, and his duo partner Thomas. The unusual support features two versatile bass players, Bill Wells and Lindsay Cooper.

I Jazz Singers' Night Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3). Hosted on fortnightly rotation by Cathie Rae and Subie Coleman, this night sees both established singers and newcomers take to the stage. Frosty J is on decks duty.
THURSDAY 9 Edinburgh I Havoc Wilkie House, 207 Cowgate, 225 5583. 10pm—2am. £4 (£3). It’s the Funkallennium party with numerous party pieces from the likes of jazzy Elemental and funky Papa Kane. DJ Andy provides classic funkdiscs. I Martin Kershaw Quartet Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3). Berklee graduate Kershaw, a master of both alto-saxophone and the enigmatically termed electronic wind synthesiser, plays original compositions, accompanied by Paddy Flaherty on drums, Mario Caribe on bass and the ubiquitous Paul Harrison on keys. Unkle Fawaz is the decknition for the evening.

from the Midnight Blue Band, who are joined by Salsa Celtica’s El Pulpo (which my Collins Spanish dictionary tells me means ‘the octopus’) on congas. Spinning those vinyl discs is DJ Demus.
I High Heel Sneakers Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £5. This six-piece dip into the Blue Note vault for a selection of funk and groove numbers. DJ Sly Si is back at the decks again.
I Rhumba Caliente Bongo Club, 14 New Street, 558 7604. 10.30pm—3am. £4-£6. Ajoint effort between members of Salsa Celtica and Sonora La Calle, Rhumba Caliente specialise in Cuban rhumba and son. Being Club Latino, there will also be all the usual activities - dance classes, food and DJ action from Simon Hodge.

I El Cometa Lizzard Lounge, Cafe Graffiti, East London Street, 556 8003. 9.30pm—2am. £7 (£6). Hot Latin rhythms and Nu-Yorican soul vibes from this top local collective, who become the latest in a long line to pay their final tribute to Lizzard Lounge before Cafe Graffiti closes at the end of the month. DJ support comes from Joseph Malik and Dolphin Boy.
I Colin Steele's Melting Pot Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £5. Groove, soul and funk, in fact all things dancefloorjazz-related from this new six-piece, fronted by trumpeter Steele, who also plays a leading role in Midnight Blue’s resident soul-jazz band. DJ Andy B provides the decks effects.
