For years Carter has been the very epitome of th excesses with partner in crime Derek Dahlarge and beat humping though, he realised the arse had been kicked out of the whole big be ‘There were a couple of months that I just hated what I was doing, energy that had drawn him to big beat just wasn’t there any more, and house and suddenly got its act together and gone ft Punk, and the sheer genius of Basement Jaxx, they’re at the head of the lly insane obscure records that are just so damn
good. ’People like Armand Van Helden or Da field. But then there's mad twisted one offs you get from Holland, rea funky or hard. There’s so much house music to love out there, which just isn't the case with breakbeat now.’
With his production too, he’s ditched the largely big beat Monkey Mafia project for now (thanks in no small part to Deconstruction doing the ditching first) and is well on his way to finishing up hi from his studio he calls ’The Cockpit’ he's reckons he's got about eight or nine different house styles. ’It goes from deep percussive to Brazilian stuff, electro based, really disco, down tempo stuff and intense funky techno. Then there's absolutely barmy lunatic things that make no sense at all which sounds like two kids having a fight with an 808 and a MS
20, smashing them into each other.’
As a DJ at his residencies of high rise at home, Hippies Use month the new improved Carter has firmly shaken off the big beat tag. 'The Junior Cartier thing is a nice little nom de
plume to play around with, but at the end of the day it's still just me putting records on in discos. Seems to work though.’
