I Scottish Opera - Carmen Theatre Royal, 282 Hope Street, 332 9000. 7.15pm. £5.50—£45.50. Based on Prosper Merimee’s tale of 19th century peasant life in Seville, Bizet’s legendary musical score has become one of the world’s most popular operas. A joint effort between Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera, this new production captures the passion, colour and spirit of the iece.

The Mozart Festival Orchestra don their 18th century gladrags for this atmospheric concert bathed in candlelight. Joining Vivaldi on the bill tonight are Charpentier, Bach, Clarke, Stanley and Handel.

The ensemble offer up a mix of old and new, with Sally Beamish’s theatrical piece, Commedia, the world premiere of Jennifer Walshe’s need nothing too deep, Poulenc’s Le Bal Masque and finally Schoenberg’s atmospheric Pierrot Lunaire.

Featuring the world premiere of Peter McGarr’s Love Remains, the concert also includes pieces by Palestrina, Victoria, Guerrero, Walton and Bairstow plus a selection of 16th century Scottish works.

I Music For A Perfect Day Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars Place, 668 2019. 7.30pm. £10 (£8). Trumpeter Simon Lenton and organist Kevin Bowyer perform a selection of Baroque classics, including Albinoni’s Adagio, Bach ’5 Air on a G String and Handel’s Music For The Royal Fireworks.
I Close To You Theatre Workshop, 34 Hamilton Place, 226 5425. 7.45pm. £6 (£3/children free). One Voice specialise in bringing wide-ranging sounds to a wide range of people, and this concert is definitely no exception. Essentially a musical potted history of one of the most popular songwriters of the late 20th century, Burt Bacharach, the concert also features music by those who taught and influenced him, including Darius Milhaud’s Suite and Henry Cowell’s Vestiges.

Getting the ball rolling is pianist Marina Nadiradze, who will perform a programme of romantic piano classics.

Opera-On A Shoestring continue to break new ground with their new space age extravaganza featuring operatic highlights from La Traviata, The Magic Flute and The Marriage 0f Figaro among others. Performed by three singers and piano accompaniment, all the arias are sung in English and musical director Richard Lewis has looked towards both science fiction and the soap opera to add an extra comic element to the show.
