I Opus De Jazz Eden, Picardy Place, 478 7434. 8pm. £3; free before 10pm. A new clubnight, featuring mellow jazz vinyl from DJ Tinku (Midnight Blue), plus live soul sounds from Nicola King (Basic Collective).

This American jazz vocalist is in town to promote her latest album, Let YourselfGo, which pays tribute to the music of Fred Astaire. Accompaniment comes from David Newton on piano. I Basic Collective Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £6 (£5). Edinburgh diva Nicky King provides the vocals to the Basic Collective’s mellow soul-jazz sound. Other band members are local DJ Aqua Bassino, whom we presume plays an instrument as well, Stevie Christie, Willy Molluson and Sly Si. DJ Porridge Fudge mans the decks.

SATURDAY 6 Edinburgh I The Jazzcotech Dancers Big Beat, Cafe Graffiti, East London Street, 557 8003. 9.30pm-2am. £7 (£6). Making a fifth appearance at Big Beat are these stunning jazz dancers, resident in London’s Jazz Cafe. Expect fast and furious footwork coupled with breath- taking gymnastics. Simon and Stuart control the decks. I Colin Steele's Melting Pot Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £6 (£5). Groove, soul and
funk, in fact all things dancefloor jazz- related from this new six-piece, fronted by trumpeter Steele, who also plays a leading role in Midnight Blue’s resident soul-jazz band. DJ Well Stirred provides the decks effects.

I Brian Kellock Trio Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 9pm—3am. £3. The Brian Kellock Trio, fronted by one of Scotland’s foremost jazz pianists, supply the mellow jazz vibes through till midnight, followed by Sly Si and Unkle Fawaz with their disco discs.

I Altered Beatz Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £3. Electronic break-beat jazz from Martin Kershaw’s Green Juice, who are joined by rapper Frosty J for alternate week slots at this jazz meets drum ’n’ bass night - DJ Decknical Hitch mans the decks.
TUESDAY 9 Glasgow
I Love You Madly Tron Theatre, 63 Trongate, 552 4267. 9pm. £17.95 including a two-course meal (£5 for limited availability standing tickets). Young vocal talent Stephen Duffy, who has studied under Tommy Smith and served time with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, performs a selection of Ellington songs, with accompaniment from the Ronnie Rae Trio. Part of Basement Jazz’s ‘Jazz Dinner’ series — dinner is available from 7pm.

I The Dynamic Duo Show Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £4. Joining DJs Extra and Kimo Cutz in their hip hop and breakbeat haven are Scotland Yard, who feature four freestyle rappers plus bass from Sly Si and drums from Willy Mollason.

I Jazz Singers’ Night Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 9.30pm-3am. £4 (£3). Hosted on fortnightly rotation by Cathie Rae and Subie Coleman, this night sees both established singers and newcomers take to the stage. Music is provided by Brian Kellock and associates, with Frosty J taking over decks duty from Kulu.
I Havoc La Belle Angele, Hastie’s Close, 225 7536. 10pm-2am.£5. This acid jazz and funk night mixes live acts with DJ action. The likes of Elemental and Yush have been gracing the stage in recent weeks, but tonight’s particular live offering is still to be confirmed.

Berklee graduate Kershaw, a master of both alto-saxophone and the enigmatically termed electronic wind synthesiser, plays original compositions, accompanied by Paddy Flaherty on drums, Mario Caribe on bass and the ubiquitous Paul Harrison on keys.
