Accompaniment comes from Brian Kellock (piano), Kenny Ellis (bass) and John Rae (drums). Unkle Fawas has the vinyl solution.

I John Rae's Celtic Feet Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 668 2019. 8.30pm. £9—£12.50(£6). Replacing Nana Vasconcelos at the last minute are John Rae’s outfit, who fuse folk and jazz in a very contemporary manner. The line-up features some of the big names in innovative Scottish music, including Simon Thoumire and bassist Brian Shiels.
I Midnight Blue Cafe Graffiti, East London Street, 557 8003. 10pm-2am. £5. Tonight the Midnight Blue Band return to their repertoire of classic soul-jazz numbers from the likes of Aretha Franklin and Astrid Gilberto. Supported by Big Beat’s DJ Stuart.
I Groove Diggaz Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £5 (£4). The city’s fortnightly slot of seriously heavyweight soul-funk courtesy of vocalist Tony ‘Edinburgh’s answer to James Brown’ King and the gang, including Martin Kershaw on sax. Decks effects come from Sly Si.

Groove, soul and funk, in fact all things dancefloor jazz- related from this new six-piece, fronted by trumpeter Steele, who also plays a leading role in Midnight Blue’s resident soul-jazz band. I Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson 8t Mulgrew Miller Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 668 2019. 8pm. £10—£12 (£6). In the Duke’s centenary year, renowned Danish bass-player Orsted Pederson and American pianist Miller have been commissioned by Bang and Olufsen to present a modern interpretation of Ellington’s legendary Blanton duets, which shattered convention 60 years ago by creating a new interaction between piano and bass.

Hosted on fortnightly rotation by Cathie Rae and Subie Coleman, this night sees both established singers and newcomers take to the stage. A unique and passionate fusion of Middle Eastern music traditions featuring Salameh on oud (Arab harp), Israeli jazz expert Asaf Sinkis on bendir (drum) and singer Naziha Azzouzi, whose vocals are influenced by the music of old Andalucia.

Berklee graduate Kershaw, a master of both alto saxophone and the enigmatically termed electronic wind synthesiser, plays original compositions, accompanied by Paddy Flaherty on drums, Mario Caribe on bass and the ubiquitous Paul Harrison on keys. I Kevin MacKenzie's Swirler Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm-3am. £6 (£5). Jazz meetz beatz (or something) in MacKenzie’s new project, which has already seen an album released on Caber. He is joined in his hip hop musings by the Bancroft brothers, Dave Milligan and John Speirs, with Gina ‘The Lanterns’ Rae on vocals. DJ Eh! Wun? makes a re-appearance behind the decks.

A second airing for this programme, featuring a variety of works from the composers’ wing of the SNJO inspired by ‘great Scots’. Writers include Sally Beamish and SNJO regular Chick Lyall, and the people lauded range from Marky Queen of Scots to Jock Stein.
