Backstage At The Pussy-Kat Club

Glasgow: The Arches, Wed 27—Sat 30 Oct.

Everyone struggles to create therr own partrcular rdentrty wrthrn contemporary socrety, and that’s never more evrdent than when we look at 'mrnorrty’ Cultures. Gowan Calder's new play examrnes thrs issue through the character of one man, a drag artrst wrth so many other splrntered subCUItures wrthrn hrs person (Jewrsh, Communist, black) that the scenarro

becomes the occasron for much humour. 'I’ve wrrtten rt on two levels,’

comments Calder. ’There’s a modern day character and a parallel life, a concentratron camp survrvor. Thrs rs a play about how people rdentrfy

otherness and persecute it however they can It mrght be about a Jewrsh character, or a homosexual character, but rt can JUSt as easrly be about brgotry anywhere, lrke Celtrc and Rangers, or Scotland versus England. The pornt about all thrs rs that whoever you are, no one has the rrght to destroy you, and there’s no doubt that people who survrve thrs kind of vrctrmrsatron develop a partrcular krnd of humour

The play IS also about that humour.’

Can a one-man show convey all thrs? 'The reason why people thmk that monologues are dull rs that there’s only one v0rce,' Calder argues ’l’ve trred to wrrte a play where there's one person, but a whole bunch of drfferent characters

on stage.’ (Steve Cramer)
