The Thomas Crown Affair (15) (John McTteman. US, 1999) Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo, Denis Leary. 110 mins. Brosnan takes two steps left of his ()07 persona to play millionaire playboy Thomas Crown, who turns to art theft to amuse himself. When he lifts a £100 million Monet from a New York museum, he attracts the attention of Russo's insurance investigator. During the ensuing cat and mouse game of wits, emotions get the better of the worthy foes and romance soon threatens both their livelihoods. The film's two heist scenes are expertly executed by McTternan, while no less riveting is the interplay between the leads. Only the trite final scene blemishes what is otherwise a fine piece of commercial art. General release.
Three Colours: Blue (15) (Krzysztof Kieslowski, France, 1993) Juliette Binoche, Benoit Regent, Charlotte Very. 100 mins. A young woman tries to isolate herself from friends and any notion of affection following the death of her composer husband and child in a car crash, but she cannot escape from the fragments of his unfinished composition, in which she played a major part. An expressive and symbolic film that is also emotionally satisfying. Binochc's award-winning performance, in a film of profound beauty, is the best of her career. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Thumbelina (U) (Don Bluth, us, 1993) mins. Animator Bluth comes close to rivalling Disney with this charming fairy tale filled with little folk. princes, easy-to- follow messages and a Barry Manilow soundtrack. Young kids will love it and even the cynically hard-hearted may soften. Glasgow: GET. Stirling: MacRobert.
Tick Tack (U) (Mohammed-Ali 'I'alebi, Iran, 1970) 63 mins. Drama stemming from the Iranian tradition in which parents donate presents to schools as rewards to good work from pupils. When Hassan's mother provides a watch and Saeed's family can afford nothing, tension mounts between the two children. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
Touch of Evil (18) (Orson Welles, US, 1958) Orson Welles, Charlton Ileston. Marlene Dietrich, Janet Leigh. 108 mins. Welles made a return to Hollywood studio employment after a decade in the wilderness with this classic baroque thriller. In a sleazy border town, the murder of a Mexican bigwig causes friction between Corrupt local detective Ilank Quinlan (Welles himself) and upright Mexican narcotics agent Vargas (Heston). Amidst a gallery of Wellesian grotesques and expressionist camerawork the dialogue between truth and justice becomes progressively more garbled. Don't be late or you'll miss one of cinema's most famous opening shots. Edinburgh: Lumiere. Toy Story (PG) (John Lasseter, US, 1995) With the voices ofTom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles. 81 mins. It isn‘t just the state- of-the-art images that distinguish Disney's first computer-generated animation feature, it's got a cracking adventure story too. A tale of friendship and self-belief combined with an exciting rescue and against-the-cloek tension, Toy Story is sprinkled with comic asides. Don’t be fooled into thinking these toys are just for the kids. Ayr: ()deon. Trains And Roses (Zugvégel) (12) (Peter Lichtefeld, Germany, 1997) 87 mins. Truck driver and timetable enthusiast Ilannes sets off for northernmost Finland to participate in the lst international timetable competition, unaware that he is being tailed a police inspector who suspect him of murder. Quite excellent (and appropriately tongue-in-cheek - geek?) thriller. Glasgow: GFI‘
Twelve Angry Men (PG) (Sydney Lumet, US, 1957) Henry Fonda, lee J Cobb, [Ed Begley, Jack Klugman. 95 mins. ()ne man stands out against his fellow jurors' somewhat prejudiced view of the murder case they are trying. The battle is consistently tense and sweaty as Fonda struggles to convince the other eleven that the accused is innocent until proven guilty. Edinburgh: Film Guild at Filmhouse.
23 (15) (Hans-Christan Schmid, Germany, 1998) 99 mins. Hanover 1986. Teenage computer hacker Karl‘s natural gift for breaking into networks drives him into the hands of the KGB. As he loses all control

over his life, Karl sees the order of things breaking down and becomes convinced of a global conspiracy. Glasgow: GFI‘. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
Up In Smoke (18) (Jon Adler, US, 1978) (‘heech Marin, Tommy Chong, Stacy Keach. 117 mins. Two LA dopeheads attempt to drive a van made entirely out of marijuana back home from Mexico. Shambling festival of drug-related humour. Edinburgh: Cameo.
Vertigo (PG) (Alfred Hitchcock. US, 1958) James Stewart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes. 128 mins. Detective Stewart. a man with a fear of heights, falls in love with a woman who apparently commits suicide. When he meets her double, he becomes obsessed with the possibility that she is still alive. Extraordinary plotting in this undervalued Hitchcock study of romantic mania, with Stewart memorany east against type as the distinctly on-the-edge cop. 'Ihe Bernard Ilerrmarm score is simultaneously lush and disturbing. Glasgow: (EFT. Walking In My Father's Footsteps (Jc Regle Mon Pas Sur 1e Pas De Mon Pere) (Rémi \K'atethouse, France, 1998) Jean Yanne. Guillaume Canet, Laurence Cole. 90 mins. ()flbeat working class comedy, part of The Martell French (‘inema Tour. Glasgow: ()deon.
Wallace And Gromit (U) (Nick Park, UK, 1989) 84 mins. All three A (from! Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Share ~ of the adventures of a Lancastrian cheese lover and his hound. Probably the funniest animation in the world. Falkirk: I’I'II (finema.
The War Zone ( 18) (Tim Roth, UK, 1999) Ray Winstone, Lara Belmont, Freddie
: (.‘unliffe, Tilda Swinton. 99 mins. Very little
will prepare audiences for this raw, no- hoIds-barred adaptatiott ofAIexander Stuart's controversial 1989 novel about incest and child abuse. The performances are roundly excellent and, particularly in the case of Winstone and Belmont, very brave. Roth and his cinematographer, Seamus McGary ey contrast claustrophobic tension within the walls of the fatnin home withithe wild elements outside to great effect. Painful, powerful drama. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
Water Wind Earth (PG) (Amir Naderi, Iran, 1989) 94 mins. A young man searches for his missing parents in drought-ridden southern Iran. But to escape the famine the inhabitants are abandoning the area. lidinburgh: Filmhouse.
Way Out West (U) (James Home, US, 1937) Stan Laurel, ()Iiver Hardy, James Finlay son. ()6 mins. The comic duo find themselves ‘On The Trail ()f'lhe Lonesome Pine' as they head out West to hand over a gold-mine deed. Plenty of good gags in this fast—paced western spoof. Supported by the Mickey Mouse cartoon, The Band Concert (Walt Disney, US. 1936, U, 10 mins) and the adventure serial, Dara/evils ()f The West (John linglish, 1943, U, 15 mins) and playing under the banner, Saturday Morning Matinee. Iidinburgh: Lumiere.
The Wicker Man (18) (Robin Hardy, UK, 1973) Iidward “’oodward, Britt Ekland, Diane (‘ilento, lngrid Pitt, Christopher Lee. 102 mins. A devoutly celibate policeman (Woodward) arrives at a remote Scottish island to investigate a schoolgirl disappearance and becomes involved in local pagan rituals. A Hammer classic, with some extremely scary and erotic moments. Falkirk: 1"I'II Cinema.
You're Dead (15) (Andy Hurst, UK, 1999) John Hurt, Rhys Ifans, David Schneider. 97 mins. The film's tag line is, ‘Pulp Fiction meets Monty Python', which gives you some idea of the tone of this comedy caper movie. The plot is nothing new: A veteran bank robber (Hurt) and two younger, more reckless partners (lfans and Schneider) mastermind the perfect heist. Except, as we all know, there is no such thing. So, the trio of confident criminals walk into their target, only to find their plan scuppered by the arrival of a second team of criminals. Cue police and SWAT learns led by a bungling detective and before you can say ‘stick ‘em up' the heist becomes a siege. Glasgow: ()deon. Showcase Cinema, UCI. Edinburgh: ABC. Kilmarnock: Odeon. Paisley: Showcase.
