Why are cartoons coming to Ayr? They are one of the many'festivals coming to
Are they just showing cartoons? There is a lot more going on than that. Over four days they are having the International Cartoon Competition Exhibition, cartoon masterclasses, internet classes, workshops, films, seminars and a chance for the cartoonists to be let loose on the public with their sketch pads.
Do you need to know anything about cartoons to join in? Don’t panic, you can either sit back and watch the professionals at work or you can sharpen your pencil and be taught by some of the top cartoonists.
Is it in lots of different venues? Most of the events are being held in the County Buildings at Wellington Square but the internet classes are at the Carnegie Library and the films are at the Odeon Cinema. Most of the events start at 10am.

be traders there to sell you all those bits and pieces you have been looking for and, if you are not sure what to do with the bits and pieces, there will also be a modellers’ table giving demonstrations and valuable advice.
After Dark Sat 25 Sep, 7pm. Linn Park Country Park, Simshill Road, 637 1147. After the sun has set, Linn’s nocturnal creatures emerge. If you’re lucky you might see and hear owls, foxes and bats.
Friends Of The River Kelvin Gala Day Sun 26 Sep, 11am-4pm. Free. Halfpenny Bridge House, Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, 946 4542. A day out for all the family including live music, canoe rides, stalls and children’s activities. The day highlights the work of the Friends of the River Kelvin Group and promotes places of interest throughout Kelvingrove park.

The Life And Adventures Of David Douglas Thu 7 Oct, 7.30pm. £2. Hillhead Library, Bytes Road, 339 7223. A conservator with the Forestry Commission, Sid House gives a talk on this famous plant collector.
Sport
Asian Football Championships Sat 25 & Sun 25 Sep, 9.30am-7pm (Sat) 1pm (Sun). Sat free, Sun £2. Scotstoun Leisure Centre, 72 Danes Drive, Glasgow, 959 4000. The Scottish Asian Sports Association football team will be joining seven other top teams from all over the UK in this football championship. The initial play offs happen on the Saturday with the final taking place on Sunday at Parkhead stadium with a 1pm kick-off.
Lawn Tennis Association £10,000 Tennis Event Sun 26 Sep—Sun 3 Oct, times vary. Free except Sat 2 & Sun 3 Oct finals when there is a nominal fee. Scotstoun Leisure Centre, 72 Danes Drive, Glasgow, 959 4000. With prizes of cash and world ranking points, national and international tennis players will be thrashing it out on court. The finals are on the last Sat and Sun when you can go to the 300 seater show court and watch for aces, nets, foot faults, deuces and finally a game set and match.

Hundreds and thousands of CDs and records will be on sale here in this music extravaganza. So if there’s a Des O’Connor classic that you’ve spent ages looking for, then this is the place to find it.

Burrell Collection

Fossil Grove

Glasgow Zoopark

A popular haunt on school trips, Glasgow Zoopark boasts a varied collection of animals, from lions to guinea pigs, as well as a well-stocked reptile house. Hunterian Art Gallery

Hunterian Museum
University Avenue, Glasgow, 330 4221. Mon—Sat 9.30am-5pm. Free. Dating from 1807, the Hunterian is Scotland’s oldest public museum - it lost its artworks in 1980 with the opening of the purpose-built art gallery in the grounds, but it is still home to a collection of the university’s treasures.
