FOOTBALL COMEDY Only An Excuse, Episode 131/2 Glasgow: King's Theatre, Tue 21—Sat 25 Sep. Loathed and hated the Old Firm may be within the rest of the footballing community, but the Scottish game would be much duller without them. Jonathan Watson has brightened up many a tedious New Year's Eve night's telly with his take-offs of Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and the tabloid-headline hogging Frank 'Macca' MacAvennie.
Not that the comedy buck stops at the steps of Parkhead and lbrox, as
Watson's updating of the show proves.

t M The full Macca: Jonathan Watson
‘lt would be a bit off if we didn‘t
mention Sir Alex,’ insists Watson of the Manchester United boss. ‘You get different characters in different ways: it may be a phrase or a mannerism
but with Ferguson, I was driving home
in the car and had some chewing
gum in my mouth and suddenly I just got it.’
You can just about imagine Ferguson taking the joke in good heart, but there must be others who have been less appreciative of Watson's cutting impersonations. What of Charlie Nicholas with the shambling grammar, or Denis Law and his talk of the clown? ’l've never experienced it face to face.‘ Watson declares. 'But they may be sitting at home thinking “the
bunch of bastards".’ (Brian Donaldson)
