Pop quiz: He's widely considered to
Name? Sasha. Real name: Alexander Coe.
Date of birth? 4/9/69 (lets hope he enjoyed his birthday at Homelands). Occupation? DJ and producer.
Where is he from? Originally Bangor in Wales, but now he calls Manchester home.
What's Sasha all about then? Although
he's always been musically inclined (he's grade 8 piano dontchaknow), the original pin-up DJ had the usual run of shit jobs including working in a fish farm.
how did he get started DJing? He and his mate would drive up to Manchester every weekend and head out to the Hacienda in the late 805. Sasha was massively inspired by the likes of Mike Pickering and Graeme Park who played there, but most of all by Jon Da Silva. How so? They stayed in the same block and hung out together. Da Silva helped him get his first gigs including a slot at The Hac. He also instilled in Sasha the importance of mixing in the right key, a
lesson a few of the top names would do
well to learn.
What shot him to superstar status? His night at Shelly‘s in Stoke caught the acid
house wave and around the same time
he got into production (helped by all the
A&R guys who used to go there). Did he take to production easily? Up
to a point, as he’s so musical it was easy for him, but not knowing his way round
a studio frustrated him and he took
time out from lucrative remixing to learn
what all the electronic jiggery-pokery did.
His name is linked with Digweed isn't it? Too true. Sasha took the fledgling DJ
under his wing and their Renaissance and Twilo partnerships are legendary. We don't read too many interviews with him, do we? He shuns press and has never been that happy with the whole celebrity DJ thing, even though he’s often referred to as a God. Guess it's a lot to live up to really, being the omnipresent Creator and all that. He‘s also not chuffed about being tarred with the 'epic house’ brush.
